Bulk Insulation

There are many types of bulk insulation, made from cellulose, glasswool (fibreglass), rockwool (mineral wool), polyester, wool or polystyrene. Bulk insulation can come as loose fill blown in place with a pump, packets of batts or in a roll or blanket.

Rockwool is denser than fibreglass and is usually used for acoustic or sound batts.

CLICK HERE for a list of most available types of bulk batts and blanket insulation and their specifications.

Bulk insulation can be used for insulating roofing material, ceilings, walls and sub-floors. Products are usually made for specific purposes to make the installation more straight forward.

Price varies depending on material. A very rough comparison of price depending on material is given below for 430 x 1170 mm batts. Fibregass batts geneally have more batts per pack than polyester or wool and are the cheapest option.

Where do I get bulk insulation?

See sidebar for insulation retailers and installers. Generally most hardware stores will stock a limtied range of insulation but will order what is requried.
Insulate Tasmania sells and installs Tontine polyester batts only. Cowley's Interior Supplies retails and installs Bradford products and Tontine. Boral Plasterboard is located next to Fletcher Insulation (wholesaler) and has ready access to the Fletcher range. Thermowool sells wool batts as well as installs. Statewide Insulation will sell or install any product required.

Ceiling bulk insulation

Ceiling batts are generally quite floppy as they lie flat on top of the ceiling lining. Therefore ceiling batts do not function well as wall or underfloor insulation as they tends to slump, requiring additional work during installation to attach insulation to framing.

Ceilings can also be insulated with blankets which roll out across the joists, insulating the timber or metal framing as well.

Loose fill

Loose fill insulation has been a very popular method of insulation in the past. It is still a viable option and particularly in the retro-insulation area it is often the best option. There are fewer installers, with only two operators identified in the state. Go to the loose fill page for more details.

Wall batts

Wall batts are usually stiffened versions of the standard batt which makes the installation easier than using a floppier ceiling batt. If nonspecific batts are used, then additional support may be requried in the form of stapling a portion of each batt to the wall frame or studs.

Sub-floor insulation

Batts manufactured specifically for underfloor use are stiffer, allowing them to hold themselves in place, without slumping. Batts usually need to be kept in place once installed. Systems using straps, string, stapling and bird netting can be used to hold batts in place. Using reflective sarking improves the overall insulation properties by adding a reflective layer to the system.

Bradfords Optimo Underfloor Insulation (Exisitng homes) is manufactured specifically for retrofitting under suspended timber floors. Batts are made from stiffened glass wool and simply use straps attached to the joist to hold batts up. Optimo Underfloor Insulation (New Homes) is made from rockwool to prevent damage from miosture during construction.

Expol underfloor insulation is polystyrene batts that are also easy to install retrospectively. Batts come in four widths, and allow for compression to fit any joist width. These have been stocked by Bunnings in the past.

Autex and Fletcher both make poylester rolls specifically for use beween floor joists (GreenStuf underfloor insulation and Cosyfloor respectively).

Alternately any standard batt can be used under the floor, however a system of securing batts in place needs to be devised. Often batts are held in place with sisalation, stapled to the bottom of the floor joists eg  Bradfords Enviroseal wrap (opt for the breathable wrap under wooden floor boards) or any reflective builders paper. The reflective surface adds insulation value as it reflects radiant energy back in to the room.

Batts are manufactured to fit two standard ceiling joist spacings (430 and 580mm). Measure the width between joists to ensure you purchase the correct width!
