Before I share my stories about how I like to use Frankincense, I thought it might be helpful for you to see the product card that Young Living (YL) created for its members. I am doing this for those of you in the USA so you can see the FDA compliant wording the company used to tell about this amazing essential oil.

There are three ways you can use an essential oil. Aromatically, topically and internally. In the United States, for an oil to be used internally, it has to be labeled as such. In response to this regulation, Young Living developed a set of oils called "Vitality". Frankincense is available with the vitality labeling so we can use it internally as well.

Frankincense is an aromatic resin which was historically used to make incense and perfumes.
  • I place 2-3 drops of frankincense on the palm of one hand and rub my hands together. Then I cup my hands and place them over my mouth and inhale through my nose. I close my eyes and allow the aroma to uplift my mood, promote meditation and improve my attitude.
  • Diffuser (atomizer, not hot steam) - I add a few drops to my favorite YL diffuser and run for 30 minutes, 3 times a day.
  • Diffuser necklace (wear like perfume) - I add 2 drops of frankincense oil to the felt pad and then wear it around my neck to promote emotional balance.
  • Room spray - I make my own sprays to use in place of my old toxic store-bought deodorizing sprays or candles.
Research shows that frankincense essential oil can help minimize skin blemishes as part of a good cleaning routine.
  • Skincare lotion: add 6 drops frankincense, 5 drops sandalwood, 4 drops geranium and 3 drops lavender to unscented facial lotion (I use Oil of Olay). Store in a glass container. Apply lotion to face, neck, chest, and back of hands to cheat the effects of aging.
  • Skincare toner: add 4 drops geranium, 3 drops lavender, and 2 drops frankincense to witch hazel in a small glass mason jar. Slowly push 10-15 round cotton makeup pads into the liquid until all liquid is absorbed. Use daily to remove residual makeup and to promote a healthy glow.

Blending an essential oil with a carrier oil or lotion slows down the evaporation of the volatile oil and gives it more time to work. It also reduces the drying effects that essential oils can have on the skin.

Before using any essential oil topically, I suggest doing a skin test on the inside of your upper arm. If the oil makes your skin feel too uncomfortable, dilute it with equal parts of a carrier oil like Young Living's V-6 oil or olive oil.

To help support the immune system, add 2 drops of YL frankincense essential oil to a veggie capsule with 2 drops of a carrier oil. Swallow the capsule immediately as it will begin to soften once the oil is added.
If you don't have any capsules yet, you can add 2 drops of the frankincense oil to a spoonful of maple syrup or coconut oil.

It may be a good idea to consult your physician before taking any oils internally. Young Living sells 250 capsules for about $8.
