Continental Theatre

Opened: As the Melvan in the 1940's. The name came from its location at Melrose and Van Ness.In the 50's it was used for radio shows and known as the KTLA Studio TheatreIn 1963 it was renamed the Encore and ran foreign films.

In the 80's it became part of the Laemmle circuit and was called the Continental.

Seating: 824

Status: Demolished -- the site is now occupied by a large new building that's part of Raleigh Studios.  Closing date is unknown.

Most of the images are from Mr. Wanamaker's Bison Archives.   Here we're
looking west at Melrose and Van Ness in 1941. On the left is the
Melvan Theatre, later the Encore and Continental.
