The Lion King
Disney movie
1994
Alexander Brighton
House: Ravenclaw
I chose this story because I always liked The Lion King and I like how the story plays out.
Hero
The hero in my story is Simba. But I'd say Nala and Rafiki are also a heroine and hero as well since Nala found Simba and if it weren't for both of them, he probably wouldn't have returned.
Plot Summary
There's a kingdom of lions. The king was Mufasa, his wife was Sarabi, their son was Simba and his friend, Nala. Scar was Simba's evil uncle who wanted to be king, so he killed Mufasa and tried to kill Simba, but was unsuccessful. Simba ran far away and met a warthog, Pumba, and a meercat, Timon. Eventually Nala found him and he returned back to fight for his rightful place as king. Another main character is Rafiki, the monkey.
Departure
Call to Adventure
When Simba's dad died from the stampede and Scar made Simba feel like it was his fault and told him to run far away. That was the Call to Adventure. I think there could actually be two Call to Adventures. When Nala found Simba and told him what Scar was doing and wanted Simba to return home and take his rightful place as king could also be the call to adventure.
Refusal of the Call
The only Refusal of the Call I can think of is when Simba meets Nala again and he refuses the call to return home and face Scar to take his place as king.
Supernatural Aid
Rafiki would be his "Supernatural Aid" because without him, Simba probably would have never returned home. Rafiki showed him his father and after that, Simba knew what the best thing to do was. The Supernatural Aid could have also been Simba's dad, but Rafiki was the one who showed him to his dad which made him change his mind and return.
Crossing of the First Threshold
Crossing of the First Threshold might be when Simba escaped the hyenas from Pride Rock. He is running into a world he doesn't know, could be dangers.
Belly of the Whale
I would say the Belly of the Whale is when Timon and Pumba take Simba to their home. That's when Simba stepped completely into the unknown.
Initiation
Road of Trials
The first trial Simba faced would be escaping from the hyenas. He was successful there. I can't really remember him failing too much in his trials. His next trial would be eating Timon and Pumbaas food, the bugs. He was successful and liked it. The trial I think he lost happened before his journey began when he was on that rock and working on his roars. He did one big one, he was happy at first, but then the stampede started and he lost his dad. Although that was part of Scar's plan.
Meeting with the Goddess
This would be when Simba and Nala meet again. Simba feels love for Nala and is really happy he could see her again.
Woman as Temptress
There isn't much of this stage. Simba didn't really get tempted to stray from his quest. His quest at this part was to face Scar and take his rightful place. He didn't want to return because he still feels like it was his fault for Mufasa's death. I guess that could be the distraction.
Atonement with the Father
Atonement with the Father could be Mufasa. Simba wasn't sure what he should do. He was able to see his father and talk to him. His father told Simba to remember who he is.
Apotheosis
The only apotheosis I can think of is when Simba finds out the truth that Scar killed Mufasa. You can see the hurt and anger in his eyes, it's sort of like a part of him died. But he has to feel a little bit of relief knowing he himself didn't do it.
Ultimate Boon
The Ultimate Boon in the Lion King is obvious. The Ultimate Boon for Simba would be becoming king.
Return
Refusal of the Return
The Refusal of the Return is definitely when Simba is pasting in that field. He doesn't want to return because he doesn't want to face his past.
Magic Flight
Simba doesn't transform himself into anything, but the boon was stolen from him. The magic flight kind of reminds me of when Simba is running home through the fields.
Rescue from Without
I don't think Simba has this stage because he had to fight Scar by himself, but he did have his friends there fighting in that battle as well.
Crossing of the Return Threshold
I think the Crossing of the Return Threshold would be after Simba actually gets back to Pride Rock because Pride Rock is his own home.
Master of Two Worlds
The Master of Two Worlds would be after the fight when Simba climbs up to the top of Pride Rock and lets out a mighty roar. He has now returned home with the friends and knowledge he gained along his journey with Timon and Pumba.
Freedom to Live
This stage would definitely be at the end when Simba and Nala show their new cub to the kingdom. That shows that their lives are moving on and they have the freedom to live.
Final Thoughts
I really liked doing this project and I especially liked how it was put into stages, like project 1, project 2, and so on. It would be a lot to do all at once. But it was fun. One thing I experienced is a need to watch The Lion King again haha. I think it does follow the steps from Joseph Campbell's hero quest pretty good. I saw almost all the steps in my story. While doing this project, some other stories and movies did come to to mind, like Beauty and the Beast. Ican think of the Call to Adventure right away when I think about that - when Belle realized her father was in trouble and left her town.
