I chose this story because a lot happened in it. There was a lot of saving going on and a lot of mystery. Plus, I love the Harry Potter books and they’re nice to write about.
Hero and Heroine
Harry Potter and Hermione Granger
Plot Summary
It starts out with Harry using underage magic, and almost getting expelled, luckily he didn’t because it was some year at Hogwarts and once again he was the hero. Hagrid became the Care of Magical Creatures teacher and brought a hippogriff to class, which attacked Draco Malfoy thanks to his rudeness. This ended up setting a date for Buckbeak’s, the hippogriff's, execution. Another part of the story, when Harry finds out that his godfather is a prisoner that escaped from Azkaban and was the cause of his parents deaths. But later on, when Sirius, his godfather gets to Hogwarts, it turns out he’s not there for Harry. Everything Harry had heard was a lie. Sirius was there to kill Peter Pettigrew, which turned out to be Ron's rat, Scabbers. 13 years earlier, Sirius and Peter were fighting and Peter was able to turn into a rat and escape, but everyone believed that Sirius destroyed him because all that was left was his finger. So Sirius got arrested. He was innocent. And now he’s back for revenge. After Buckbeak's execution, Sirius, in the form of a dog, pulls Ron away, into the Shrieking Shack. Harry and Hermione follow and in the Shrieking Shack, where they find out the whole truth about Sirius and Peter. Professor Lupin, the Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher for that year showed up and turns out to be Sirius’s friend. Once they make Peter change back into a human, Harry stops them, telling them that they’ll take him back up to the castle to prove Sirius’s innocence, then give Peter to the dementors. Professor Snape arrived, but we won’t get into that, not important. Professor Lupin was a werewolf, so once they got outside, he changed form because of the full moon. He was enraged, going after everyone. After a crazy night, Sirius and Harry ended up at the lake where the dementors were attacking and they both passed out. Harry woke up in the hospital wing and found out that Peter escaped. Sirius is locked away in the castle and the dementors are going to suck his soul out of him. Professor Dumbledore comes in and gives Hermione some good advice. She takes out her time turner, explains it to Harry and goes back in time. They were going to Hagrid’s. They saw themselves talking to Hagrid in his hut. Then while no one was looking, they pulled Buckbeak away before the executioner came back out of the hut. So they saved Buckbeak. Then they went to the Shrieking Shack and waited until they saw themselves come out. Without being seen, they were running, trying to lead the werewolf Lupin away. Harry ran to the lake to try to stop the dementors. He saw himself and Sirius on the lake, passing out. He stopped the dementors from finishing their job. Then after all that, before heading back to the hospital wing, Harry and Hermione rode on Buckbeak's back up to where Sirius was being held, and freed him, and let him fly away on Buckbeak. Then before time ran out on the time turner, they rushed back to the hospital wing.
Departure
The call to adventure would be when Harry runs away from the Dursleys, he used underage magic and as far as he knows, got expelled. When he’s standing on the side of the street, the Knight Bus comes and picks him up to take him to the Leaky Cauldron.
I don’t think there is a refusal of the call in this one either because nothing happens that makes Harry refuse to take the call of adventure. He gets on the Knight Bus and goes to the Leaky Cauldron and finds out that he’s actually not expelled and goes back to Hogwarts later on.
The Supernatural aid would be the Stan Shunpike from the Knight Bus because without the Knight Bus showing up, Harry would never have known that he could go back to Hogwarts.
I don’t think there is really a first threshold.
The belly of the whale, I was thinking, could be the ride on the Knight Bus, it was something he wasn’t use to, it was a really bumpy ride and went so fast.
Initiation
The road of trials would be when Harry was sure he was going to get himself expelled from Hogwarts after using underage magic to blow up his aunt. Harry also found out that Sirius Black broke out of Azkaban to come after him, believing his life was in danger. He found out that Sirius is actually his Godfather and was the one that led Voldemort to his parents. Another trial would be when Sirius got caught and was about to get his soul suck out of him. Another trial was when Buckbeak was sentenced to death for attacking Draco Malfoy. That’s all of the road of trials I can think of.
I think a Meeting with the Goddess could have happened when Harry first realized that Sirius was innocent, he loved Sirius as if he was his father. And he wanted to move in with Sirius, and was planning to if they could prove that he was innocent, but they couldn’t.
I don’t recall there being a woman as temptress.
Atonement with the Father, I think was Professor Dumbledore. After everything took place and Harry, Ron, and Hermione were in the hospital, and Sirius was locked away in the castle, waiting for his soul to be sucked out. They thought all was lost, and they couldn’t do anything to save him now. But Dumbledore came and gave Harry and Hermione some advice, and he told them that they can save more than one innocent soul tonight. So Harry and Hermione used the time turner to go back in time, so they could have a chance a saving Buckbeak and Sirius.
Apothesis could have been when the dementors were attacking Harry and Sirius. Sirius got locked away and was going to get his soul sucked out, Harry could have died spiritually, thinking that there was nothing much he could do to save his only family he has left. That’s the only thing I could think of for apothesis.
The Ultimate Boon was Buckbeak and Sirius because because Buckbeak and Sirius were the ultimate prize for Harry and Hermione, their goal was to save them and they succeeded.
Return
The refusal of the return happened when Harry found out that Sirius is his godfather. Harry and Sirius made plans for Harry to live with Sirius, so Harry wouldn’t have to go back to the Dursley’s after Sirius’s name was cleared. Unfortunately, it did not go as planned and Sirius's name was never cleared.
The Magic Flight was when Buckbeak was killed and Sirius was imprisoned in a tower in Hogwarts, waiting to be kissed by dementors. Harry and Hermione, thanks to Hermione’s time turner, went back in time, ran away with Buckbeak before the execution. After the fight with the werewolf Lupin and the dementors, they rode Buckbeak to where Sirius was being held and broke him out. When they were on the ground, Sirius got on Buckbeak's back and took of on Buckbeak far, far away.
The Rescue from Without would, I think, be Dumbledore because Dumbledore gave them the idea to go back in time to save Buckbeak and Sirius because they were innocent. Without Dumbledore’s advice, Buckbeak would be dead and Sirius would be sent back to Azkaban with his soul sucked out.
Crossing of the return threshold could be on the train on the way back. Harry was hoping that Sirius would be cleared of charges, so he could live with Sirius. But it didn’t turn out as planned and now Harry is on his way back to the Dursley’s for the summer.
Harry became the master of two worlds because he experienced a lot at Hogwarts that year. He rescued a hippogriff and found out that he has a godfather and rescued him from a terrible fate.
Now he’s back in the Muggle world. He has the Freedom to Live because he can freak Dudley and his aunt and uncle out by telling them about Sirius - how he broke out of prison. Harry now knows that he has a godfather and he’ll be keeping in contact with him. Also, in two months, he’ll be back at Hogwarts for another year.
Final Thoughts
By doing this project, I experienced a lot and learned a lot. I experienced what it would be like to be a hero. I loved learning about the different stages there are as well as what happens in each stage and the different ordeals that the hero has to go through. My story followed Joseph Campbell’s hero quest really well. There were some differences (some stages that might not have been in it), but other than that, I think for the most part, it followed his hero quest. There are a couple movies that I can think of that has elements of the Monomyth, The Lion King 1 and 2 does and I’m thinking of Aladdin. I’m not 100% sure how accurate Aladdin fits under the elements of the Monomyth though.
