HEALING SPELLS
Spells are the fastest way to help anyone who is in pain. Spells are extremely useful for acute (short-term) pain, since the effects of spells are quick and immediate. Most spells can be used by witches or wizards of any skill level, as long as the correct incantation is uttered. Anapneo clears the throat/airway of the target. This spell is particularly useful if someone is choking on food. Episkey heals minor injuries, including broken noses, broken lips, and broken toes. Ferula is used to conjure a splint for a broken arm or a broken leg. Rennervate revives anyone who has been stunned and knocked unconscious by Stupefy. However, if a witch or wizard is hit by multiple Stunners, hospital care is required. Tergeo can be used to siphon off blood, dust, and grease. For Healing, this spell is typically used to clean open wounds. There is a spell that is used to heal deeper gashes. Professor Snape used this spell to heal Draco Malfoy after Harry Potter cast Sectumsempra on Draco. The incantation sounds "almost like a song" and must be repeated at least three times.
HEALING HERBS
Herbs are key ingredients in many healing potions. Here are a few that are worth mentioning for their special properties.
Dittany is very commonly used in potions, since it has scar healing properties. Applying dittany to a wound makes skin stretch over the wound, speeding up the healing process. Dittany can be eaten raw to cure shallow wounds. It is useful for injuries due to splinching, which occurs when part of a person's body is left behind during Apparition. Essence of Dittany is sold as a brown liquid and may release flammable vapours.
Echinacea is a purple cone flower. Its roots are particularly good for stimulating a person's immune system. Garlic does more than keep vampires away! It improves blood circulation. Cooked garlic is not as effective as raw garlic. Ginger is native to Asia. It is good for the digestive tract. Ginger is also used to treat motion sickness. Kava Kava is a plant found on the Pacific islands. It has anti-anxiety and tranquilizing effects.
Mandragora, better known as Mandrake, is a plant with a root that looks like a human. The cry of a mature Mandrake is fatal to anyone who hears it. Matured Mandrakes are used in the Mandrake Restorative Draught, which cures those who have been Petrified.
Mimbulus Mimbletonia is a plant native to Assyria. It looks like a small grey cactus. Instead of spines, it has boils that release Stinksap. Mimbulus Mimbletonia is an antidote to nervousness, shyness, and timidity.
Moly is a black-stemmed plant with white flowers. It can counteract enchantments when eaten.
Rue is an evergreen, short woody plant. It has a strong scent. Madam Pomfrey used Essence of Rue to nurse Ron Weasley back to health after he was poisoned.
St. John's Wort is a bright yellow flower. It always blooms on the 24th of June, which is the birthday of St. John. St. John's Wort is widely used for depression and other mood disorders. (Though not preferred by Muggle medical professionals due to MANY interactions!)
