Hockey Brisbane Background
Hockey Brisbane was formed four years ago by BHA and BWHA to promote hockey through local television coverage and has since been developing concepts and initiatives to continue the growth and profile of hockey.
Recently Hockey Australia has been acknowledged by Federal Sports Minister Kate Lundy as “a model in terms of its gender equity programs”, Hockey Brisbane too has always been an even mixture of men’s and women’s hockey. In the first 3 years game coverage was broadcast on Monday nights by community television to a potential 500,000 viewers around Brisbane. In 2012 not only has broadcast coverage and game coverage increased but the addition of segments containing interesting items such as history and coaching have drawn a much larger audience from Brisbane, Queensland, Australia and the rest of the world.
Hockey Zone Background
With the launch of new free to air digital stations, Hockey Brisbane saw an opportunity to change the format of its television exposure and also broaden the coverage area to a potential 20 million viewers across Australia. The launch of Hockey Zone also included the creation of a website and Youtube channel which have been instrumental in its growth and popularity. With over 100,000 hits from 85 different counties to the Youtube channel in just 27 weeks, the coverage area has not only increased to a potential 20 million through television but also to a potential 2.3 billion internet users around the world.
In 2012 not only has Hockey Zone featured Brisbane Hockey but also covered, u18 Men’s National Championship, Queensland’s first Super League, Queensland State Women’s Masters, Southern Skies Junior Final, Southern Cross Junior Festival, Queensland State Championship, QAS v USA and Kookaburras v Black Sticks from Cairns.
We see the world of broadcasting and technology has changed and opportunities have arisen for smaller sports or events to create their own coverage and stream it to a global audience, so Hockey Zone has also continued to push the boundaries this year with the development of its live internet streaming. Starting with the first ever All Stars game, a total of 23 game have been covered. 2012 saw the last four weeks of the season all live streamed, ending in the Grand Finals on the 15th of September.
In the years 2009 -2011 25 games were covered per season, in 2012 Hockey Zone covered 115.
