- In the United States today, two distinctly different rail systems exist: freight railroads and passenger railroads.
- In recent years, the railroad have been thriving and privately funded freight railroads have focused on enhancing the reliability of their service and their intermodal capacity.
- Passenger railroads are publicly subsidized by taxpayers; they provide a public service by offering a safe and environmentally friendly travel option.
- The Department of Transportation estimates that tonnage on the railroad system will increase by 88 percent through 2035.
