Abstract: »My contribution on gender violence raises questions regarding the causes and treatment of rape in Muslim history. Using shari'a court records, literature, press and police reports, and laws involving rape, I ask why modern Egypt laws do not recognize rape as ightisab, preferring to deal with such cases under different titles that make the offense more acceptable in a religious/traditional context, when before modernization of law, shari'a courts had no qualms about recognizing ightisab for waht it is and handling it accordingly.« (Source: Amira El Azhary Sonbol. »Introduction.« Women, the Family, and Divorce Laws in Islamic History.
