Abstract: »Glancy's 'The Accused: Susanna and her Readers' examines the 'looking' or 'gazing' code 'Susanna' is subject to. Taking her cue from feminist film theory, Glancy argues that the gazing code is gendered. Women are looked at. Men look. Therefore, scholars describe the garden scene as seduction rather than coercion or attempted rape. In other words, critics adopt the elders' voyeuristic tendencies to the point of complicity. Susanna, pious and interpreted as virtuous because of her wish to compromise her life rather than sin, might be interpreted as an unwilling object of the gaze; although she calls on God of her own initiative, thus becomes an independent agent briefly, Daniel's intervention reduces her again to an object. Women readers might be caught between identifying with her as object or with the gazers (male, elders, authoritative) as subjects. This gender representation appears to be supported by the gendered ideology inscribed by and in the text. It constructs our understanding of it though the gendered seeing/visualization of the narrative situation (cf. Bal on Judith).« (Source: Athalya Brenner. »Introduction.« Feminist Companion to Esther, Judith and Susanna. Edited by Athalya Brenner. Sheffield 1995: 23)
