Abstract: »An analysis of the different figures of the rapist in this period takes into account this act considered not only as retrograde and compulsive but moreover as a claim of culture and modernity. If the criminal appears as a strong counterpart in the process of individual construction at the turning point of the century, this analysis allows to focus on the ambiguity of the victim status in the close fields of art and life and questions both fascination and subversion in literary work which sets down the rape as an aesthetic act. This dynamic approach enables to draw a spatial map of sexual/gender relationships in decadent literary movement and defines the rape a driving force intertwined with various aspects of industrial and technological revolution (means of transport, transfer, rap(e)ture).« [Source: Theses.fr]
