Abstract: »The author of this paper has been a sexologist practitioner in France in the Cellule Départementale d’Accompagnement du Développement de la Sexualité (CDADS) — the local agency for support in the development of sexuality; the public body in charge of medical and social protection of the population at local level within the General Council of the Marne department of France. Within this framework, between 2002 and 2012, the management of minors or adult victims of sexual abuse revealed that medical practitioners are not the first point of contact for victims of sexual abuse. Research published in 2010 showed that the average time taken by victims to report their abuse was 16 years. The aim of this article is to show that medical practitioners can be in the frontline for screening and enabling early management of such cases. The methodology consists firstly in raising awareness of the severe consequences of such abuse at a medical, psychological, social and sexual level for adults and minors who are victims, based on data from the literature and the observations of the author in trying to understand the primary role of medical practitioners in the screening process. The second half of the article presents what the author believes are obstacles to awareness of this problem; the social image of sexual abuse of minors throughout the 20th century has not facilitated its recognition as such; in addition to lack of education about the development of sexuality. The third part establishes a link between the concept of sexual health, cognitive, social and biological approaches and the development of sexuality in order to understand the impact of sexual abuse on the sexual and overall development of minors, and raise awareness of screening for problems of sex abuse. The experience of the CDADS is a practical illustration of how the training of doctors and other health practitioners at this theoretical level is able to increase the victims’ access to care. The conclusion insists upon the relevance of the approach adopted by the CDADS within the context of the current situation. At a time when problematic sexual behaviour is rising amongst minors, this approach offers the possibility of early identification of underlying sexual abuse in order to offer an appropriate response.« {Source: Sexologies]
