Abstract: »The book begins with the only chapter focusing on the traditional victim role, Chapter 2, "Rape and Genderside." Sexual violence during wartime is well documented, and women (as well as men) continue to be victims of the most unimaginable and inhumane behavior. Cases of atrocities offer insights into the trauma and challenges faced by victims and members of their families and communities. As rape is now a war system, it is essential that we understand and acknowledge the horrors of such torture that often lead to psychological damage or death. Sandra Cheldelin tells this story of all wars, offering evidence of war's underbelly and the ways it underscores our moral imperative to intervene. She demonstrates how the victim narrative is incomplete: describing women who have emerged as agents of their own healing processes, have testified in court against perpetrators of heinous crimes, have worked with health care and news service organizations to bring this issue to the public, and have engaged the international community in a call for change through gender mainstreaming–bringing gender-specific activities into the publc to promote gender equality.« (Source: Sandra I.
