Abstract: »In the following chapter, Zoë Brigley Thompson investigates how Larsson's novels, together with Sara Paretsky's Body Work (2010) and Megan Abbott's Bury Me Deep (2009), 'subvert retrograde scripts of gender and sexual power' in their reworking of the noir genre. Challenging traditional notions of the femme fatale, all of these novels 'convey sympathetic narratives about sexual exploitation that offer possibilities of healing'. What is more, they 'emphasize that the explanation for sexual crimes does not lie in the survivors's behaviour; blame is placed solely on the rapist, who is framed as the femme fatale's deadly opposite: the homme fatale.' Like Freeman, Brigley Thompson is concerned with language and the ways in which it can be used and manipulated to both confirm and subvert notions of rapability and victimhood.« (Tanya Horeck, Katarina Gregersdotter, and Berit Åström. »Introduction.« Rape in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and Beyond: Contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone Crime Fiction.
