Abstract: »Examines 16th-17th-century Catholic interpretations of canon law and moral, ethical, and civil precepts regarding proper compensation or punishment (of the assailant) for a woman's loss of virginity outside of marriage, whether by force or seduction. Aside from punishments deriving from civil law, the clerical debate revolved around the obligation of the perpetrator to provide a dowry for the woman and marry her.« (Source: Historical Abstracts)
