Abstract: »Yonson Ahn explores the relationship between national identity, sexuality and soldierung in the Japanese empire by focusing on the process of socialising Japanese male conscripts to be warriors during World War II. The soldiers of the Japanese army were trained to be aggressive towards enemies but submissive toward military authorities and Ahn argues that the system of 'comfort women' or regulated military prostitution enabled soldiers to reconcile their contradictory roles. Sexuality was thus central to the process of military mobilisation and military effectiveness.« (Source: Karen Petrone and Jie-Hyun Lim. »Introduction: Meandering between Self-empowerment and Self-mobilisation.« Gender Politics and Mass Dictatorship: Global Perspectives.
