Abstract: »In the final chapter of this part, 'Over Her Dismembered Body: The Crime Fiction of Mo Hayder and Jo Nesbø', Berit Åström argues that the disturbing violence found in Mo Hayder's Birdman and Jo Nesbø's The Snowman is central to the critique of how 'society reduces women to their sexual and reproductive functions'. Hayder and Nesbø have a very different approach to the presentation of violence, with Hayder, on the one hand, describing the bodies of dead women in disturbing detail and Nesbø, on the other, strategically withholding such detail from the reader. However, as Åström demonstrates through a close reading of their works, both authors manage to avoid eroticizing the female corpse. Indeed, Nesbø and Hayder both critically deploy a serial killer narrative, ultimately demonstrating that the horrific crimes of the psychopaths so chillingly described represent 'society's attitudes and concerns writ large, taken to their logical conclusion'. Like Stieg Larsson, Nesbø and Hayder are concerned with exposing the actions of a society that hates women.« (Tanya Horeck, Katarina Gregersdotter, and Berit Åström. »Introduction.« Rape in Stieg Larsson's Millennium Trilogy and Beyond: Contemporary Scandinavian and Anglophone Crime Fiction.
