Li Kung-Lin (d1106): Foreign and Strange Lands N-Sung Painter
--------------------------------------------------------------

Also called Li Lung Mien
Taken from: Probstein Catalog 1913 p19-20

A set of five drawings in monochrome representing scenes from: " Foreign and strange lands." Opposite each picture an explanation.

1 The San-foh-ts (Sumatra)

2 Suan-lo (Siam)

3 The Hwei-Huh (Ouigour Turks)

4 The K'un-lun Ts'eng-k'i (Madagascar)

5 Fu-Sang state
The medieval drawing of Madagascar was put for sale in London in 1913 for 50 British pounds. The text accompanying is given under. I do not know where the drawing is today. No picture of the drawing is known.

From the description in the catalog it seems it is not a drawing of tribute bearers (as the other prints of Li Kung Lin are) but a drawing of the country itself.

The K'un lun Ts'eng K'i country
In the south west parts adjoining is an island in the sea. This land possesses a huge bird.
You may cut the quills of their wings to make water-carrying utensils out of them. Moreover they are black bodied wild men, if you entice them with food you barter as many as you like to do work (as slaves) for the foreign trader.

The drawing is not specific for Madagascar. It is a theme used for several countries in Barbarian Tribute paintings. Under some examples.

But the text (as given in the upper drawing) is specific. It is exactly the same text as for the other document: Foreign and Strange Lands; of the same author:
