Greek and Roman History (Grades 3 - 7)

Many individuals do not have the necessary preparation to adequately teach Greek and Roman History. Can you describe Minoan, Mycenaen, or Phoenician culture? Can you describe the Trojan War? Can you explain Homer and Greek mythology? Can you explain the Persian and Peloponnesian Wars? Can you name the various rulers of Rome? Certainly, it would be wonderful to see the Acropolis, the Parthenon, the Coliseum, and other historical sites in order to learn their history. However, many of us can not do that. The following information should make it easier to teach about these ancient cultures.

Marlin and Laurie Detweiler have created a series of 32 cards to be used for a one-year curriculum in Greek and Roman History. Each card has an approximate date, a picture about that week's lesson, a summary of things to be learned that week, and a list of references for the week's lesson. These cards are used at the Christian Logos School in Lancaster, Pennsylvania and are published and made available to the public through Veritas Press. The items listed below and marked * are the ones which the Detweilers and Veritas recommend be used with the cards. You will notice quite a bit of historical fiction which gives an accurate portrayal of the times. You will also note close ties to the teachings of the Bible. The cards would be an excellent reference for a public school teacher, but could not be used directly in the public schools.
