The Ping Pong Paddles

The paddles that I received from the Special Collections Department at Hofstra University are from 1972, a time when ping-pong was more than just a sport. The faces on these paddles are caricatures of Richard Nixon, the president of the United States from 1969 to 1974 and Mao Tse-tung the leader of China during the same time. These leaders were the faces of “Ping-Pong Diplomacy”, the foreign policy that reunited China and America. These are not paddles that would necessarily be played with but rather represent one of the most important aspects of politics during the late sixties and early seventies.
