Active tectonics, tectonic geomorphology, and earthquake geology
I am a broadly trained geomorphologist/geologist working on active tectonics in Japan and East Asia. I am interested in how landscape and related geologic structures have evolved through time in tectonically active regions, such as how and when the Japanese mountain ranges were formed. I am also interested in active faults and seismic hazards. In this regard, I work extensively on active fault mapping and paleoseismology, the study of historical and pre-historical earthquakes based on geologic evidence recorded in landscape and stratigraphy. I employ a multidisciplinary approach, including geomorphology, Quaternary geology, structural geology, remote sensing, geochronology, and shallow subsurface geophysics. My research is highly field-oriented, and I have worked in areas, from west to east, Turkey, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Myanmar, Indonesia, Philippines, Japan, and far-east Russia in collaboration with colleagues from local universities and research institutes. I am interested in working with motivated students with a strong field-based geomorphology/Quaternary geology/structural geology background. All of my former and current international students have been supported by the MEXT scholarship. Doshisha University also offers tuition waivers for qualified Ph. D. students. If you are interested in studying in my lab, please contact me at the address above.
