Problems with DePuy ASR Reach World Wide Proportions

It seems that patients all over the world who have received the DePuy ASR hip replacements systems are having problems with the device. In other countries such as the United Kingdom, France and Germany reports are coming in that the device is failing or causing injury in an uncommonly high rate.

 the British Orthopaedic Association and the British Hip Society claim in a recent statement that data on the ASR XL Acetabular System from four surgeons show the rate of second operations, or revisions, ranges from 21 percent after four years to 49 percent after six years. John Skinner, an orthopedic surgeon and chairman of the groups’ expert advisory group on metal bearing hips, claims in a statement that about 10,000 of the hips were implanted in the U.K., including 5,000 or so resurfacing devices and 5,000 of the ASR XL prostheses, also known as total-hip replacements

DePuy claims that those numbers are rather high and have a different set of numbers for the failure rate of their products. The information that was released by DePuy states that the official failure rate is 13 percent of ASR XL patients required second surgeries in five years, and 12 percent of patients with the resurfaced hips needed such operations within five years.These percentages were enough to cause DePuy to officially recall the ASR and ASR XL from the worldwide market.

The Medicine and Healthcare products Regulations Agency (MHRA), which is the UK version of the FDA, gave notice that it has recommended that no further DePuy ASP hip replacements be implanted, that all unused ASR hip replacement implants were to be returned to the manufacturer and that all patients implanted with ASR hip replacements were to be informed of the product recall and called in for check-ups. , gave notice that it has recommended that no further DePuy ASP hip replacements be implanted, that all unused ASR hip replacement implants were to be returned to the manufacturer and that all patients implanted with ASR hip replacements were to be informed of the product recall and called in for check-ups. |The he Medicine and Healthcare products Regulations Agency (MHRA), or the British equivalent to the FDA, has given notice that it has recommended that no further DePuy ASP hip replacements be implanted, that all unused ASR hip replacement implants were to be returned to the manufacturer and that all patients implanted with ASR hip replacements were to be informed of the product recall and called in for check-ups.}

 If patients begin to show the following symptoms they are advised to visit their doctor as soon as possible: anxiety, cognitive decline. depression or memory loss.Some other physical reactions patients should be weary of include: dizziness, fatigue, hearing loss, tissue damage, tumors, tremors, nerve damage, ringing in ears, bone damage, organ damage, and vision problems.

Since the worldwide recall of the ASR line hundreds of patients have filed lawsuits against DePuy. Many experts believe that DePuy may stand to loose over a billion dollars due to legal actions.
