Dr. Spencer graduated from Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons in New York. While training at Columbia, he was drawn to the specialty of orthopaedic surgery and the subspecialty of pediatric orthopaedics. He completed his postgraduate residency program in Orthopaedic Surgery at UCLA Medical Center, with a wide range of clinical rotations in subspecialties of Orthopaedic Surgery, including the Shriners Hospitals for Children - Los Angeles, and he became extensively involved in medical and biomechanical research at the Orthopaedic Institute for Children (formerly Orthopaedic Hospital).
With a subspecialty fellowship in Pediatric Orthopaedics at Boston Children's Hospital/Harvard Medical School, Dr. Spencer gained further clinical training in pediatric orthopaedic surgery. This accredited fellowship at the largest pediatric orthopaedic program in North America provided Dr. Spencer with expertise in a wide variety of skills in pediatric orthopaedics and orthopaedic trauma. In addition to intensive surgical experience and extensive involvement in research during fellowship, he also completed a certificate in Applied Biostatistics at Harvard, a comprehensive overview of study design and applied biostatistics that has given him the unique ability to bridge the gap between research and clinical care.
Dr. Spencer's research interests include published peer-reviewed papers in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, the Bone and Joint Journal, Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, The Spine Journal, Journal of Hand Surgery, Journal of Children's Orthopaedics, Journal of Orthopaedic Trauma, and Instructional Course Lectures. He is a diplomate of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Pediatric Orthopaedic Society of North America, and has served on the program committee for the Scoliosis Research Society. He has authored and co-authored abstracts at national and international meetings.
Dr. Spencer has collaborated with physicians and researchers across multiple institutions and subspecialties in clinical care, publishing, and discovery.
