Employees of the Highways Department of Lothian Regional Council formed the Highways Hillwalking Club in 1977 and it is still going strong almost 40 years later, although the membership is now open and encompasses members from all walks of life.

The Highways Hillwalking Club has an organised programme of hill walks throughout the year, mainly on the second Sunday of the month. Transport is by bus and in recent years we have formed an informal link with the Ptarmigan Mountaineering Club wherebye we may share a bus in order to save costs.

In addition there are also organised weekend trips further afield to Skye or Torridon for example. These trips are made by car when efforts are made to organise car sharing.

Individual members also get together regularly to organise trips away, to get to more remote areas and also to plan trips overseas to areas such as the Alps or the Dolomites.

The emphasis of the Highways Hillwalking Club has been to climb Munros and Corbetts as well as Grahams and Marilyns. We do not tend to walk as a big group but normally form two or three smaller parties to cater for different tastes and abilities. Even low level walks have been known to take place.
