  • Start of CKD Galbraith Adult Leagues
    The Mixed Doubles League on Monday and the Mens and Ladies Doubles League on Thursday got under way under excellent weather conditions. Most of the results have been loaded through League Planner onto the LTA web site and can be viewed there. 

    CKD Galbraith Leagues
    The Mens Doubles, Ladies Doubles, Mixed Doubles Leagues, Fourteen and Under Junior and Twelve and Under Junior Leagues commence on the week beginning 19 April. There are more teams entered than last year and for the first time for some years there is a Ladies Doubles Division 4. At the end of the season, there will be the presentation of the trophies to the winners of the divisions of the Junior and Adult Leagues, and a day of tennis at Grantown Tennis Club. The date for Junior Leagues presentation will be Saturday 27 June and clubs on that day will complete for the new Grant Trophy. The date for the Adult Leagues presentation will be Saturday 4 July and clubs on that day will compete for the new CKD Trophy.

    CKD Galbraith continue as sponsor of the Adult and Junior Leagues in 2015
    Highlands Tennis is pleased to announce that CKD Galbraith will continue as the sponsor of the Adult and Junior Leagues in 2015, following on from the successful sponsorship in 2014. 


    Annual General Meeting held at Forres Tennis Club on 10 November, 2014
    The following Office-bearers were elected:
    Chairman - John Milne (Aberlour Tennis Club)
    Vice-Chairman - David McPherson (Elgin Tennis Club)
    Secretary - Hamish McBain (Rothes Tennis Club)
    Treasurer - Jane Sim (Elgin Tennis Club)

    The Executive Committee includes the above and Alistair McLeod (Grantown Tennis Club) and Jane Bradley (Inverness Tennis and Squash Club). In addition Yvonne Birnie (Rothiemurchus and Aviemore Tennis Club) and Maggie Campbell (Nairn Tennis Club) were appointed to the Executive Committee.

    Hamish MacBain was appointed Secretary of the Adult and Junior leagues. Five resolutions were passed which related to changes to the League Rules and the revised League Rules can be found under Leagues and tournaments. League Planner software will be used this year.

    The presentation of the trophies is on 5 July at Grantown Tennis Club at 1.30 pm with the trophies being presented by Phiddy Robertson of CKD Galbraith.


    CKD Galbraith Junior Leagues - Final League Tables
    Congratulations to Inverness A teams for winning the Fourteen and under League and the Twelve and under League Division 1 and to the Rothes A team for winning the Twelve and under League Division 2. In the Fourteen and under League both Inverness A and Nairn had the same number of points and it was down to the percentage of sets won. In the Twelve and Under League Division 1, Inverness A pipped Inverness B in the same manner. The results are given under Leagues and Tournaments. The presentation to the winners will be made at Grantown Tennis Club on 28 June when a tournament for Junior players will also take place.     Junior Leagues in last few matches
    There are some exciting finishes likely in the Junior leagues. In the Fourteen and Under league, Forres/Findhorn have 19 points  - three points ahead of Inverness A and Nairn A who have both played a match less. Inverness A have a lead of 4 points over Nairn in the Twelve and Under League Division 1 whilst Rothes A have a similar size of lead over Rothiemurchus B in Division 2. 

    Inter-district Junior Tennis Championships at Kilgraston
    On the first weekend of the championships, held on 4-6 April, Highlands Tennis was represented by:
    17 and Under Girls: Catherine Kelly and Amber Paterson
    17 and Under Boys: Stephen Grant and Ewan McKinnie
    15 and Under Girls: Jenny Campbell and Katy Scott
    15 and Under Boys: Alistair Hambrey and Douglas Tait.

    The team finished fifth out of nine teams after some closely fought matches.

     On the second weekend of the championships, held on 11-13 April, Highlands Tennis was represented by:
    13 and Under Girls: Zoe Eriksson and Molly Vaughan
    13 and Under Boys: Jamie Dobie, Ian McWilliam and Josef Morris
    11 and Under Girls: Alice Campbell and Kim Johnstone
    11 and Under Boys: Fergus McWilliam and Kristian Morris.

    The team finished sixth out of seven teams in cold and windy conditions.

    Over both weekends there was some excellent individual results. 

    Fixtures for Leagues in Summer 2014
    Fixtures for the Mens, Ladies and Mixed Doubled Leagues and for the Fourteen and Under and Twelve and Under Leagues are now available under Leagues and Tournaments. They are being sponsored by CKD Galbraith for the first time this year. Although the number of divisions within the leagues remain the same as last year, the number of teams playing in the leagues has increased slightly. The League Rules for 2014 are also given under Leagues and Tournaments. The fixtures start on Monday 19 April with the three divisions of the Mixed Doubles League.

    Two new Board Members were elected: Alan Wilson (Elgin Tennis Club) and Amanda Massie (Forres Tennis Club).

    Mac Baldwin and Hamish McBain will continue as the Secretaries of the Adult and Junior Leagues, respectively. The trophies were presented to the winners of the Adult and Sixteen and Under leagues in 2013 at the AGM (see photograph in Photos). 

    New surface on the courts at Inverness Tennis and Squash Club
    Congratulations to the club for installing new surfaces on the three courts at the club. The formal opening was on Saturday 26 October when a fun day of tennis-related activities took place. Danny Alexander MP cut the tape to open the courts and then took part in a game of mixed doubles (see Photo Gallery). He demonstrated a mean forehand but needs some coaching on his backhand!

    Fourteen and Under and Twelve and Under Leagues Results
    Congratulations to Inverness for winning the Fourteen and Under League and Twelve and Under League Divisions 1 and 2 - a clean sweep for the club. Photographs of the winning teams are in the Photo Gallery. 

    Summer Leagues Results
    Congratulations to Inverness A for winning the Mixed Doubles Division 1 and for Rothiemurchus B and Tain for winning Divisions 2 and 3. In the Mens Doubles Division 2 congratulations to Elgin B for winning and in Mens Doubles Division 3 to Rothiemurchus for winning without losing a set. In the Ladies Doubles Division 1 congratulations to Nairn A for winning, In Divisions 2 and 3, Forres A  and Inverness B were the winners. Congratulations to them. The final placings in these leagues are given under Leagues and Tournaments.


    Summer Leagues Update

    All the results of matches played up to the end of May are now in the Leagues and Tournaments section.

    Summer Leagues

    The Summer Leagues are now in full swing after a difficult start due to the adverse weather conditions with many cancelled fixtures. The results of the fixtures to date and the rest of the fixtures for the season are now on the web site together with the grade 4 and 5 competitions to be played in the Highland area in July and August.  


    North of Scotland Inter-district Mini Tennis

    Mike Martin has written an article in the News section (with pictures) on the recent Inter-district mini tennis match, held in Aberdeen, in which Highlands Tennis took part at mini orange, mini green and mini red levels. Read the article to see how junior players performed.  



    Award for Mike Martin, District Coach

    Mike Martin has won the Tennis Scotland Coach of the Year. It was announced at the Tennis Scotland Annual General meeting on Thursday 13 December. The citation for the award reads "District Coach Mike Martin is continuously working hard to develop tennis in the Highlands. He has established a programme at Bellfield Park allowing it to become the second Beacon site in the North of Scotland. He offers free adult coaching sessions at Inverness Tennis and Squash Club for beginners, intermediates and advanced players which has boosted the clubs adult membership whilst also carrying out a lot of schools outreach work and delivering two successful schools festivals in the summer.  He is highly involved in the Inverness club championships, Inverness Open and has recently started a Highlands tournament circuit."  

    Sixteen and Under Junior leagues

    Congratulations to the Boy's team from Inverness Tennis Club and the Girl's team from Nairn for winning the Sixteen and Under Leagues.

    Summer League Tables
      
    Now that the Summer Leagues have been completed, the final Summer League placings are as follows (see Leagues and Tournaments). Congratulations to Elgin A for winning the Mixed Doubles League Division 1, Rothiemurchus A for winning the Mixed Doubles League Division 2 and Rothiemurchus B for winning the Mixed Doubles League Division 3. Congratulations also to Rothiemurchus A for winning the Ladies Doubles Division 1, Forres B for winning the Ladies Doubles Division 2 and to Elgin B for winning the Ladies Doubles Division 3. In the Mens Doubles, the winners of Division 1 were Inverness A and the winners of Division 3 were Nairn. Congratulations are also due to Inverness A and Nairn B teams for winning the Divisions 1 and 2 of the Fourteen and Under Junior League, respectively, and to Elgin for winning the Twelve and Under Junior league


    Scottish Inter-district Junior Championships 

     Highlands Tennis U11 and U13 teams performed well at the Championships held at Kilgraston on the weekend of 31 March-2 April in some close fought matches with the other districts. After three days of competition the Highlands Tennis teams were sixth out of eight teams. Read a full report from Mike Martin,the District coach, in the News section.    




    Mini-tennis tournament
    Mike Martin, District Coach, writes: 
    "On Saturday 10 March the first mini orange super series tournament was held in Dalfaber, Aviemore. A total of 8 competed in the event: 6 from Inverness Tennis and Squash Club and two from Rothiemurchus and Aviemore Tennis Club. The winner of the whole event was Matthew Wilson of ITSC, beating Angus Harrold of Rothiemurchus 7/3 7/4 in an entertaining final. All the matches highlighted how many great young players there are being produced in the highlands. A massive thanks goes to the parents and players for showing the commitment needed to make the tournament a success. There will be several other mini orange super series events upcoming and we hope to increase the amount of participation." 
     
    The final player positions are given under tournaments and a photograph of the players is in the photo section.


    Highlands Tennis Festival 20-22 April 

    The Highlands Tennis Festival will be held at Bellfield Park, Inverness on 20-22 April. There will be competitions for all age groups. Contact Lucy Grant at Lucy_grant52@hotmail.com for more details. Details are also available on the LTA website. 


     Highlands Tennis Leagues 2012

    Clubs are requested to confirm with Mac Baldwin, the Adults Leagues' Secretary, by e-mail at mac@baldwin4.co.uk, the teams that they will be entering for the Mens Doubles, Ladies Doubles and Mixed Doubles in 2012 by 31 March. Matches will start with the Mixed Doubles on Monday 23 April and the Ladies and Mens Doubles on 26 April. 

    Clubs are also requested to give the numbers of teams that will be entering in the Twelve and Under and Fourteen and Under Leagues to Hamish McBain, the Junior Leagues' Secretary, by e-mail at hamish.mcbain@tiscali.co.uk, by 16 March 2012. The Sixteen and Under League will be held in the early autumn this year.

    Nairn win 13 and under leagues

    Congratulations to Nairn Tennis Club A and B teams for winning the 13 and Under A and B leagues which have now been competed.  The Inverness Tennis Club A team was one point behind the winner as the runner-up in League A and Tain Tennis Club B team was the runner-up in League B.   

    Appointment of District Coach for winter 2011-12

    John Milne, the Chairman of Highlands Tennis Ltd writes:

    I am pleased to announce that Mike Martin has been appointed the District Coach for Highlands Tennis Ltd for the period from 19 September 2011 to April 2012.

    His main roles will be (a) management of District junior coaching programme for U17, U15, U13 and U11 Boys and Girls through a combination of coaching sessions at Bellfield Park, Inverness and matches with other districts etc. during weekends in the winter  and (b) encouraging the development of orange and green mini-tennis in the District through day sessions in the District and organisation of matches. 

    He is looking forward to working with clubs, coaches and junior players over the autumn and winter"

      Junior U13 Leagues
    The matches to be played in the junior U13 leagues from August to October have been announced and can be found under Leagues and tournaments.   


    Final League Tables
    The winners and runners-up of the doubles leagues for the summer of 2011 were spread throughout the clubs in the Highlands showing the strength of competitive tennis in the North of Scotland. 

    In the Mens Doubles Leagues the winners of Division 1 were the Inverness Tennis Club A team with Grantown Tennis Club A team as runners-up.  The Inverness C team were winners of Division 2 with runners-up the Forres Tennis Club A team with the same points as the Tain Tennis Club A team and in Division 3 Elgin Tennis Club B team were winners with Rothiemurchus and Aviemore Tennis Club as runners-up.

    In Division 1 of the Ladies Doubles Leagues Nairn Tennis Club A team were the winners with Elgin Tennis Club A team as runners-up. In Division 2 the winners were Forres Tennis Club A team with Tain Tennis Club as runners-up. The Forres B team were winners of Division 3 with the Inverness B team as runners-up on the same points as Aberlour Tennis Club and Kingussie Tennis Club. In Division 4 the Elgin C team came first with the Grantown C team second.

    In the Mixed Doubles Leagues the Elgin Tennis Club A team had the same points as the Nairn Tennis Club A in Division 1 but had won more sets and so were winners. In Division 2 the Inverness Tennis Club A team were the winners with the Rothiemurchus and Aviemore Tennis Club runners-up and in Division 3 Elgin C team were th ewinners with Gordonstoun Tennis Club as runners-up although they had the same points as the Elgin Tennis Club D team.

    In the Junior Leagues the Under 16 Girls League was won by Nairn Tennis Club with Inverness Tennis Club as runners-up whilst in the Under 16 Boys League the winners were Inverness Tennis Club with Gordonstoun Tennis Club as runners-up.      

    Highland Fling 2011 Tournament
    Forres Tennis Club is hosting their Highland Fling Tennis Tournament between 4th and 11th September. Further details from Julia Thomas at Forres Tennis Club.


    Inverness Tennis Tournament
    This year Inverness is hosting the Grade 3 North of Scotland Junior Closed Championships. This is an exciting opportunity at the end of the tour for players to come to a district event and compete. The dates are from the (6th - mini-red; 7th - mini-orange) 8th to the 14th August 2011.
