"Great moments are born from great opportunity, and that's what you have here tonight, boys. That's what you've earned here tonight. One game; if we played them ten times, they might win nine. But not this game, not tonight. Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight we stay with them, and we shut them down because we can. Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world. You were born to be hockey players—every one of you, and you were meant to be here tonight. This is your time. Their time is done. It's over. I'm sick and tired of hearing about what a great hockey team the Soviets have. Screw 'em. This is your time. Now go out there and take it!"
Herb Brooks was the coach of the 1980 Men's US Olympic hockey team. On the night the US played the Soviet Union in the medal round, Brooks gave a speech to inspire his team to pull off the greatest upset in sports history. The opening line of his speech says, "Great momments are born form great opprotunity." This line represents personification because opprotunities can not give birth to a moment, it is a human quality. Brooks is saying how his team is being given the chance that every team dreams of; defeating the enemy on way to winning a gold medal.
Brooks talks about them being born, growing up, mending together, and tells them how they are going to play as if he was their father, "Tonight, we skate with them. Tonight, we stay with them. And we shut them down because we can!". Brooks is telling his team what they are going to do in the game; how they will become heroes. The reason he is so inspirational and wants them to win so bad is because in 1960 he was the last player cut off the roster and watch his team win the gold medal from his living room, so he does not want these boys to miss the opprotunity. His speech is filled with emotion because he does not want his team to let this momumental moment to pass by.
In the 60's and 70's, the Cold War was ever present in the world. During the same time the Soviet army was invading satellite countries, their hockey team was dominating international play. They won the Olympic gold medal in 64', 68', 72, and 76'. When Brooks said, "This is your time. Their time is done", he was not only talking about in the hockey theatre but also as a world power. He was not only talking about putting the hockey team at a hault, but the spread of communism in the world. Brooks gave his team the power for a victory, but he inspired a nation. The nation now believed that communism could be stopped. He gave the US citizens a moral victory over the Soviets. It showed the US was a force to be wreckoned with, it showed the US would strive for world peace, and it showed the US will be the hero in the face of evil, communism. Hockey showed to be a mechanism to improve society in the Cold War era because it unified a country to beleive they could put a stop to the Soviet Union on the world stage.
