Native Plants and History at Chinsegut Hill

posted Nov 1, 2013, 10:01 AM by Hernando Chapter Florida Native Plant Society

In October, the Hernando Chapter highlighted our quest to restore the natural heritage of Chinsgut Hill. Our native plant sale was a rousing success with a wide variety of trees, shrubs, grasses and flowering plants from Rita Grant, Hickory Hill, and Green Isle. Visitors also enjoyed Rita’s pioneer food plant and invasive species displays. Tina lead a guided walk to identify invasive species on the grounds and talk about methods of control.

Also on hand with information and activities were Friends of Chinsegut Hill, Hernando Master Gardeners, and Joyce Reinhardt, a volunteer from Dade Battlefield who showed children and adults how to make items from native plant materials. The event attracted a diverse crowd with interests spanning many aspects of nature and history. Thanks to all who helped to make the day a success. It was a wonderful community collaboration.

We will be back at Chinsegut Hill with our information table and guided walks on November 16 for the First Chinsegut Hill Celebration, featuring many crafters and artists.
