After leaving university I started to train as an actuary, but got bored and moved to Guinness in Dublin as a statistician, which was much more interesting. I then worked for a few years as a management consultant, and a couple of years with Jaeger who made me redundant in 1982. Determined that no-one was ever going to do that to me again I worked for myself for a while then, with my wife, started an IT company writing payroll software. We sold the company in 2006. I have done a bit of consultancy for HMRC since then but am now quite retired. I ski quite a lot, sail, play bridge and listen to music (especially opera). I married Sue in 1975, we have three children and one grandchild and live in Surrey.
