Now living just outside Rugby with Betty, music-mad son Euan and Brandy, the most wonderful dog in the world (daughter Alison studying in Glasgow). After Edinburgh I went to Africa, then, having caught the travel bug, left ICI after a few years and did a PhD with War on Want. Various jobs followed, including Deputy Director of the Refugee Council and UK Director of Intermediate Technology – not so much a career as a series of accidents. Dabbled in politics, becoming Labour’s most experienced loser, and then joined the Electoral Reform Society as its Chief Exec where I have been for the last 11 years. This has involved regular visits back to Scotland where we have an office and which leads the UK in democratic reform (but not everything is our fault). We have recently bought a cottage in Fife, Betty hoping that some day I might decide to retire here.
