The Preventive Care Navigator is a Specialty Tool developed develop by Healthcare Visions.   It includes critical details describing the PPACA preventive care implied requirements, but NOT specified or found directly in the legislation or regulations.

Affordable Care Act Ensures Women Receive Preventive Services at No Additional Cost

Historic new guidelines that will ensure women receive preventive health services at no additional cost were announced today (August 1, 2011 by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). Developed by the independent Institute of Medicine, the new guidelines require new health insurance plans to cover women’s preventive services such as well-woman visits, breastfeeding support, domestic violence screening, and contraception without charging a co-payment, co-insurance or a deductible.

On 7/21/2011, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released recommendations for preventive health services for women that health plans must cover without a co-payment or cost sharing per ACA Section 2713. Services recommended for coverage include:

  • Screening for gestational diabetes
  • Human papillomavirus (HPV) testing as part of cervical cancer screening for women over 30
  • Counseling on sexually transmitted infections
  • Counseling and screening for HIV
  • Contraceptive methods and counseling to prevent unintended pregnancies
  • Lactation counseling and equipment to promote breast-feeding
  • Screening and counseling to detect and prevent interpersonal and domestic violence
  • Yearly well-woman preventive care visits to obtain recommended preventive services
