Statistical database

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

statistical database is a database used for statistical analysis purposes. It is an OLAP (online analytical processing), instead of OLTP
(online transaction processing) system. Modern decision, and classical statistical databases are often closer to the relational model than
the multidimensional model commonly used in OLAP systems today.

Statistical databases typically contain parameter data and the measured data for these parameters. For example, parameter data consists
of the different values for varying conditions in an experiment (e.g., temperature, time). The measured data (or variables) are the measurements
taken in the experiment under these varying conditions.

Many statistical databases are sparse with many null or zero values. It is not uncommon for a statistical database to be 40% to 50% sparse.
There are two options for dealing with the sparseness: (1) leave the null values in there and use compression techniques to squeeze them
out or (2) remove the entries that only have null values.

Statistical databases often incorporate support for advanced statistical analysis techniques, such as correlations, which go beyond SQL.
They also pose unique security concerns, which were the focus of much research, particularly in the late 1970s and early to mid-1980s.

U.S. Census Data and Statistics

The United States Census Bureau provides data about the nation’s people and economy. Every 10 years, it conducts the
Population and Housing Census, in which every resident in the United States is counted. The agency also gathers data

Find Data and Statistics from the Government

Many government agencies have statistical information on a wide range of topics. You may need to do further research to find out
which agency has the information you're looking for or can help you find it.

Remember, keywords are important when doing a search. Make sure your keywords can help narrow down the search results.
For example, instead of trying a search for "education statistics," try something more specific like "campus security statistics" or
 "graduation rates."

Federal Government Data and Statistics

These federal agency programs collect, analyze, and disseminate statistical data and information:

You may also search a federal agency's website to see what types of statistical information it provides.

"So many of our modern health problems stem from issues of abundance: fast food,
car-friendly suburbs, and endless couch-borne entertainment.

The cure for these, according to the quantified-self cult of Silicon Valley, is more data!
Just collect information about every step we take, every beat of our heart, every toss
we take in our sleep, everything we eat and every drop we drink, and all will be revealed.

But what if the abundance of data, too, is part of the problem?"

WIPO Statistics

"We cooperate with intellectual property (IP) offices from around the world to provide our stakeholders
with up-to-date IP statistics. We also publish statistical reports on worldwide IP activity and on the use
of WIPO-administered treaties in the protection of IP rights internationally.

Reliable IP statistics are an important tool in understanding trends in business and technology and in
the use of the IP system worldwide and across different countries.
Data information ↓

IP data published in these pages are taken from the WIPO Statistics Database. The database contains:

Data provided by national/regional IP offices for WIPO's Annual IP Data Survey. The data are collected
at an aggregate level by various breakdowns (e.g. number of patent filings or grants by office and origin, etc.).
A continuing effort is made to improve the quality and availability of IP statistics. It is difficult to obtain data
for all IP offices with all possible breakdowns, however every effort is made to cover data for as many offices
and countries as possible; and

Data compiled by WIPO during the application process of international filings through the Patent Cooperation
Treaty, the Madrid System and the Hague System.

In addition, indicators of patent families and fields of technology are developed by WIPO based on data
from the PATSTAT database, which is maintained by the European Patent Office.

IP data reported in these pages are based on the following concepts:

Country of origin: used to categorize IP data by resident (domestic) and non-resident (foreign).
The residence of the first-named applicant (or inventor) recorded in the IP document
(e.g. patent or trademark application) is used to classify IP data by country of origin.

Resident and non-resident: a resident IP filing refers to an application filed by an applicant at its national
IP office. For example, an application filed by an applicant resident of Japan at the IP office of Japan is
considered as a resident filing for Japan IP office data. Similarly, a non-resident filing refers to an IP
application filed by an applicant at a foreign IP office. For example, an application filed at the IP office of
China by an applicant residing in France is considered a non-resident filing for China IP office data.
The IP grant (registration) data are based on the same concept.

Filing and grant date: the IP filing data are based on the date of filing. The IP grant (registration) data are
based on the date of grant (registration). The IP data by field of technology are based on the date of
publication and the patent families data are based on the priority (or first filing) date."

Statistical data
IP statistics data center

"WIPO IP Statistics Data Center is an on-line service enabling access to WIPO’s statistical data. Users can
select from a wide range of indicators and view or download data according to their needs. This service is
intended to be a tool for IP professionals, researchers and policymakers worldwide.
IP statistical country profiles

Statistical country profiles provide information on patents, utility models, trademarks and industrial designs.
They cover different dimensions of IP activity, including incoming and outgoing filings, the share of filings in
different technological fields, total patents in force, and the use of international IP systems by applicants."

About Data for Research (DfR):

"Data for Research is a free service for researchers wishing to analyze content on JSTOR through a variety of lenses and
perspectives. DfR enables researchers to find useful patterns, associations and unforeseen relationships in the body of
research available in the journal and pamphlet archives on JSTOR. To this end we provide data sets of documents to
researchers: OCR, metadata, Key Terms, N-grams and reference text.

JSTOR incorporates metadata and OCR text from many different sources. We work to mitigate any inconsistencies,
but you may come across issues with datasets, such as duplicate OCR, missing OCR, or incomplete metadata.
Please contact us if you encounter data issues.

Using the site:

Through a faceted interface, researchers can explore the entire JSTOR archive, quickly and easily defining content of
interest through an iterative process of searching and results filtering. By creating a DfR account, you can download
the metadata, word frequencies, citations, key terms, and N-grams of up to 1,000 documents. The interface operates on
Boolean logic but should you find your query especially difficult to build, we’re happy to help."

How to Use the United States Government Agency Section
of the Statistics Resources Research Guide for Statistical Data Sources
for Specific Topic Searches

Finding and using statistical sources is a challenge for most students and many researchers.
Finding government statistical sources are even more of a befuddlement. Requests for government
information, let alone statistics, have dwindled in recent years in live reference situations.
Providing a tool that shows, agency by agency, where government statistics hide in a group of links
to database search results contributes to statistical literacy and to information literacy for government
statistical sources and to the uses for government statistics.

Even though the actual publications found in these searches are not free, all of the databases used are.
Over fifty government agencies of the United States federal government are now included and this is a
work in progress as is the entire statistics resource guide. United States government agencies do provide
statistical data for other countries.

Many teachers tell students not to use Google for serious research as I religiously did until October 2014
when I saw one web address on the MedLib-L discussion group. I have no idea what the post was about,
I just noticed one web address and as the lesson evolved, I started joining the students rather than trying
to change them in regards to using Google Web Search as part of my database searching research tool.

Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc., based on Google Search, that shows how
often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across various regions
of the world, and in various languages. The horizontal axis of the main graph represents time
(starting from 2004), and the vertical is how often a term is searched for relative to the total number
of searches, globally. Below the main graph, popularity is broken down by countries, regions, cities
and language. Note that what Google calls "language", however, does not display the relative results
of searches in different languages for the same term(s). It only displays the relative combined search
volumes from all countries that share a particular language (see "flowers" vs "fleurs"). It is possible to
refine the main graph by region and time period. On August 5, 2008, Google launched Google Insights
for Search, a more sophisticated and advanced service displaying search trends data.
On September 27, 2012, Google merged Google Insights for Search into Google Trends.[1]

Google Trends From Wikipedia

Google Trends is a public web facility of Google Inc., based on Google Search, that shows
how often a particular search-term is entered relative to the total search-volume across
various regions of the world, and in various languages. The horizontal axis of the main
graph represents time (starting from 2004), and the vertical is how often a term is searched
for relative to the total number of searches, globally. Below the main graph, popularity is
broken down by countries, regions, cities and language. Note that what Google calls
"language", however, does not display the relative results of searches in different languages
for the same term(s). It only displays the relative combined search volumes from all countries
that share a particular language (see "flowers" vs "fleurs"). It is possible to refine the main
graph by region and time period. On August 5, 2008, Google launched Google Insights for
Search, a more sophisticated and advanced service displaying search trends data.
On September 27, 2012, Google merged Google Insights for Search into Google Trends.[1]

Retrieving Data

 Documentation

Google Firebase

https://firebase.google.com/docs/database/admin/retrieve-data

This document covers the basics of retrieving database data, how data is ordered, and how to perform simple queries on data.
Data retrieval in the Admin SDK is implemented slightly differently across different programming languages.

  1. Asynchronous listeners: Data stored in a Firebase Realtime Database is retrieved by attaching an asynchronous listener
to a database reference. The listener is triggered once for the initial state of the data and again anytime the data changes.
An event listener may receive several different types of events. This mode of data retrieval is supported in Java and Node.js Admin SDKs.
  2. Blocking reads: Data stored in a Firebase Realtime Database is retrieved by invoking a blocking method on a database reference,
which returns the data stored at the reference. Each method call is a onetime operation. That means the SDK does not register any
callbacks that listen to subsequent data updates. This model of data retrieval is supported in Python Admin SDK.

The Human Mortality Database

http://www.mortality.org/

The Human Mortality Database (HMD) was created to provide detailed mortality and population
data to researchers, students, journalists, policy analysts, and others interested in the history
of human longevity. The project began as an outgrowth of earlier projects in the Department of
Demography at the University of California, Berkeley, USA
, and at the Max Planck Institute for
 Demographic Research in Rostock, Germany
(see history). It is the work of two teams of
researchers in the USA and Germany (see research teams), with the help of financial backers
and scientific collaborators from around the world (see acknowledgements). The Center on the
Economics and Development of Aging (CEDA) French Institute for Demographic Studies (INED)
has also supported the further development of the database in recent years.

We seek to provide open, international access to these data. At present the database contains
detailed population and mortality data for the following 39 countries or areas:

Australia

Estonia

Japan

Slovakia

Austria

Finland

Latvia

Slovenia

Belarus

France

Lithuania
