What is the 3rd Annual Health Action Conference?
The 3rd Annual Health Action Conference is a two-part event designed to engage future physicians and health professionals in discussions of health care reform, health access, and advocacy issues within their community and to provide the Anschutz Medical community an opportunity to serve our neighbors by participating in an immunization clinic for underserved children. It is a student-led initiative with leadership from the Colorado Medical Society - Medical Student Section (CMS-MSS) and sponsorship from the LEADS program, Colorado Area Health Education Center System (AHEC), Medical Student Council and Metro Community Provider Network (MCPN). The conference is planned as a two-day event occurring on Tuesday, August 17th and Saturday, August 21st, 2010. The first day is a symposium featuring leaders in health care policy and health care delivery from our community while the second day incorporates an immunization clinic for underserved children in the Aurora and Cherry Creek School Districts.
Leaders of CMS-MSS and other student groups developed this event with three main objectives:
Tuesday, August 17th will commence the conference with an afternoon symposium of thought leaders in our community, featuring keynote speaker Lorez Meinhold. Lorez Meinhold is the Director of Health Reform Implementation and Senior Policy Analyst for the Health Office of Colorado Governor Bill Ritter, Jr. Students, faculty, and community members will have the opportunity to enjoy a catered lunch during the keynote address. This will be followed by a choice of two breakout sessions to continue a discussion of health care issues that face various patient populations in Colorado. We are very excited to welcome this year's speaker panel.

On Saturday, August 21st student volunteers will provide vitals checkups, health education, and observe vaccination administration during a free immunization clinic hosted by Metro Community Providers Network at their North Aurora clinic. In the past as many as 300 underserved children from the Aurora and Cherry Creek School District have benefited during this clinic. There will also be a community fair with various community organizations present to provide wellness and health information to Aurora residents. Training for the clinic day will be provided to students following the breakout sessions. The clinic will culminate with a BBQ for student volunteers and staff to celebrate a successful conference and clinic.
