Welcome

We are an ecumenical grouping of 14 churches in Headington, Oxford.

'Do all you can to preserve the unity of the Spirit by the peace that binds you together' (Ephesians 4.3)

The World Council of Churches at Lund in 1952 called on the churches to 'act together in all things except where deep differences of conviction compel them to act separately'. Churches Together in Headington (CTH) exists to exalt Jesus Christ by promoting and encouraging co-operation between the churches of the area (Headington, Barton, Sandhills, and Risinghurst) in shared Christian worship, mission, and social action.

In pursuit of this mission, each year CTH organises, or is closely involved in, a number of events:

On the last Monday of each month, at 7:45 pm, an informal ecumenical act of worship is held in the Priory, Old High Street. Members of the participating congregations take it in turns to lead the service.

In late January the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is marked with an ecumenical service on Sunday afternoon at one of the participating churches. Other gatherings for worship and fellowship are arranged for the week.

Lent is marked in alternate years by a series of talks by distinguished speakers (Year 1) and house discussion groups based on material prepared by the Churches Together in Britain & Ireland (Year 2).

In May most of the churches join in house-to-house collecting during Christian Aid week.

In the summer CTH actively supports a Fun Day in Bury Knowle Park, with lots of free activities for all the family, children and adults.  We also provide refreshments -- all absolutely free! This is the churches' gift to the community.  Also in the summer individual churches join together to run activities for youngsters during the school holidays.

During Advent CTH designs, produces, and distributes a Christmas card to every household in the area, with seasonal greetings and details of Christmas services in the participating churches.

In the past we also supported the work of the Oxford Christian Institute for Counselling. The Institute is a professional counselling charity that was established in 1985 to support and supplement the pastoral ministry of the churches. The counselling service is open to anyone over the age of 18, regardless of race, religion, disability, financial situation (some limited financial assistance may be available) or sexual orientation. OCIC counsellors are Christians who acknowledge and respect the spiritual dimension to life but they do not offer specifically Christian counselling.

CTH has a two-fold structure: the Christian churches in Headington, who pay an annual subscription; and individual Christians living in the area, whether they worship in Headington or elsewhere.  CTH is part of Churches Together in England and Churches Together in Oxfordshire.
