About Our Team

The Hunter quiz bowl team was founded in the winter of 2005-06 by Guy Tabachnick and Tony Cheng, both class of 2009. A small membership developed under the advisory of counselor Chris Rogutsky. In October 2006, the team, being temporarily advised by lab technician Asumana Randolph, performed very well in its first tournament at Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, VA. The team has since attended many other tournaments, both regional and national. Soon afterwards, math teacher Melanie Pflaum took over as advisor, a post she held until her departure from HCHS after the 2007-08 school year. Math teacher Stephen Young took the venerable helm of team adviser between 2008 and 2013. During the 2013-14 school year the team was advised by the joint reign of math teacher Lyubomir Detchkov and counselor Colleen Hennessy. English teacher Christopher Chilton advised the team from the fall of 2014 until the spring of 2017, a tenure in office which included two consecutive national championships for the team. In the fall, science teacher Caitlin Samuel will be taking over as adviser.

The team won the PACE National Scholastics Championship in June 2012 and the NAQT High School National Championship Tournament in June 2016 and June 2017. Hunter Quiz Bowl also holds the all-time scoring record for a high school on regular difficulty questions or harder, set at 627.3 points per game at March Madness at Livingston High School on March 18, 2017. For a year-by-year history, including competition history, see Team History.

If you'd like to join us, please drop by one of our practices! We meet Mondays during Activities in room 422 and Tuesdays and Fridays from 2:50-5:00 p.m. in room 302.

  • Gilad (Middle School Director), Class of 2018
Hi, I'm Gilad, and I'm in 12th grade. I'm Israeli and Hungarian (so you'd better watch out when there's a question related to one of them!) My proudest trivia-related achievement is the memorization of every country in the world and their respective capitals. I'm also most interested in biology, religion, and world history. Also, Harry Potter. Forever.
  • Sam Brochin, Class of 2018
I love the Mets. Everyone else is wrong. I joined because I felt like it. I live on the Upper West Side, closer to civilization than most other people. I do not like My Little Pony. I get everything on geography, sports, and Jewish stuff. I am a seventh eighth ninth tenth (site manager note: now twelfth) grader, and Wilton never lets me forget it.
  • Ada-Marie Gutierrez, Class of 2018

  • I joined quiz bowl in the fall of eighth grade because I had been too intimidated in the past to do so. It is now one of my favorite activities, along with fencing, theatre, singing, and knitting. I am not knowledgeable about as much stuff as my sophomore peers, but the stuff I do know about, I know A LOT about, so watch out. My overall quiz bowl goal is to just be awesome at every category, but right now I'm working on literature and American history. And at being awesome.
  • Chloe Levine (Captain), Class of 2018
Heading into my fourth year with HCHS Quiz Bowl, I am thrilled to be serving as the Captain for the 2017-2018 season after serving as Vice Captain last season. I was that kid whose parents yelled at her because she tried to read novels at the dinner table, and so specializing in literature has been an absolute joy. Outside of QB and HB, I write songs, poetry, and prose, sing Soprano I in chamber choir, act whenever I get the chance, and do traditional English and American dance. Hope to see you at the buzzer! :)
  • Daniel Ma (Vice Captain), Class of 2019
I am an 11th grader and joined quiz bowl in Fall 2013 from overhearing a conversation. In case you're wondering, our "high school" begins in 7th grade. History and geography are my specialties, but really only geography because Luke gets all the history first. Along with quiz bowl, I play history bowl on our national champion JV team, do lots of music stuff, and compete in math team. I also like to play sports.
  • Rachel Yang, Class of 2021
I joined in the fall of 2015 as a small-bean who knew a thing or two about Greek mythology, and have since matured into a smallish-bean who aspires to become a literature/mythology specialist. Outside of quiz bowl, I enjoy procrastinating, venting, and sleeping (things I also do while playing quiz bowl), as well as taking Latin, playing the piano, and swimming. Please note: I will never let you power anything Taylor Swift. Ever. (Site manager note: In the 2016-2017 season, Rachel won the Hunter mirror of a Taylor Swift tournament written by Darien Quiz Bowl Captain Michael Borecki.)
