HBCU-RISE Participants – Where Are They?


JUAN GARCIA

Current Position:  Accepted M.S. degree program in Marine Microbial Ecology- Florida Gulf Coast University. His planned research will involve working with Archaea. 

Juan Garcia was a HBCU-RISE Center program participant from Florida A&M University Biology Department.  He joined the Microbial Ecology laboratory under the mentorship of Dr. Henry Neal Williams, PI for the HBCU-RISE grant during the summer 2007 as a microbiology laboratory assistant.  He participated in the HBCU-RISE Summer Internship Program.  Research interest: “Changes in bacterial numbers in bottled water following drinking at selected time periods” Presented at the 2008 Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students.

JONATHAN W. JOINER

Current Position: Starting August 1, 2011 will be participating in the Wake Forest University PREP Program.

2007 HBCU-RISE Summer Program – Senior Biology major from Livingstone College- Salisbury, NC.  He completed the Molecular Microbial Ecology course at FAMU/ESI

Current Position:   United Allergy Labs Clinical Laboratory Specialist- Raleigh, NC

2007 HBCU-RISE Summer Internship Program participant from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, NC.  Research interest included “Bacterial sensitivity to sunlight of water in Lake Munson”, Measuring Bacterial presence in Dental Unit Water Systems, and “Comparing the bacteria in consumed water bottles under various conditions”.

Current Position:  Graduate Student - Master of Science in Marine Sciences - Savannah State University

Research Interest:  The Application of Molecular Tools to Assess Trophic Links in Pelagic Zooplankton Diets.  

HBCU-RISE Internship Participant: Biology Major- Skidaway Institute of Oceanography: Savanna, Georgia.  She states “Participating in the FAMU/ESI HBCU-RISE program was a highlight of my undergraduate experience.  I shadowed a graduate student, Ms. Sherilyn Morgan, and worked on a Bdellovibrio research project which honed my skills as a microbiologist.  In addition to the research, I was also immersed into the graduate student experience at FAMU.  Participating in the FAMU/ESI HBCU-RISE program solidified my resolve to attend graduate school.  I am still more than grateful for the research and networking opportunities I received as a program participant.
