MEMOIR TO CELEBRATE THE CENTENARY OF THE FOUNDING OF THE WOMEN’S ROYAL NAVAL SERVICE (WRNS) IN 1917

As she starts her one hundredth year, Brenda Birney (born in 1917) has published her own experience as a Wren – The Women’s Royal Naval Service: a World War Two Memoir – neatly coinciding with the centenary of the WRNS in 2017.

Aged only 24, in 1941 Brenda Heimann, a London secretary, joined up as a Wren.  Little did she imagine that she would work in the tunnels under the white cliffs of Dover. Eight months’ preparation for D-Day in Inverness culminated in Brenda being driven all along the south coast of England from Portsmouth to Dover delivering the final sealed instructions to commanders taking part in the Invasion of Normandy. Stationed in Caserta, near Naples, Brenda was shown around Venice by one of the real Monuments’ Men. At the end of the War, Brenda took her first flight – from Naples to Malta for her last posting.  The WRNS was the time of her life!

It was through a U3A autobiography writing group that Brenda wrote about her life.  It reminds us - not only of the sense of adventure of her generation and the relative freedom even enjoyed by young women during the period of World War Two but also – of the sacrifice she and many of her peers made in terms of lasting ill health triggered by war conditions.

“My mother was looking back and writing in her 70’s and 80’s. Yet reading her account of her service years she conveys the same feeling of exhilaration as when she used to tell me these stories, as a child, in the 1950’s”, said her daughter.
