Karla Lopez, Board Member

Karla was born and raised in Hayward.  She grew up learning to love and appreciate art in its many forms, initially through writing and dance, and later through drawing and painting.  Once she began to delve into the world of painting, it became her passion. She studied Fine Arts at Chabot College, and has been actively creating artwork for the past 15 years.  She has displayed her work at the various Hayward Arts Council galleries, as well as The Sun Gallery, HAHS, Snappy’s Cafe, Casa Peralta, Adobe Art Gallery, Fremont Art Association, and Sanchez Contemporary.  Karla joined HAC in 2016.  In addition to showing her artwork, Karla served as curator for the Foothill Gallery for two years.  In 2019, she will begin curating the Elmwood Gallery at the new Hayward Public Library. Karla is a Library Assistant and has worked with the City of Hayward since 2003.  

 Suzanne Philis, Board Secretary


Long-time Hayward resident, City of Hayward employee, HAC member, and lover of all forms of artistic expression, Suzanne Philis is our latest Board Member, approved on Monday, March 18, 2019. Suzanne brings a wealth of knowledge to the Board including an understanding of local government, event coordination, and the value of community partnerships. A Bay Area native, Suzanne has participated in HAC Member Exhibits, City of Hayward Employee Art Shows, and San Jose Works art exhibits. Her work includes paintings, stained glass, illustration, and jewelry design. Suzanne commented, “I’m thrilled to have been selected to serve on the Board, and I look forward to working with all the talented artists who make Hayward a thriving environment for the arts.”
