In the early 1980s, Alameda County Art Commission encouraged representatives from each of the member cities to consider establishing arts councils to serve a variety of arts in their cities.  Commissioner Marlene Teel (later Teel-Heim) worked with the Hayward City Council to form the Hayward Arts Council in 1983.  From the beginning, Haywards Arts Council has worked to be responsive to community needs and to stimulate interest in the arts.

The Council has been housed in several locations since its inception, and is currently situated in the same building with the Hayward Area Historical Society at the corner of Foothill and Russell.

Annual Events

Besides ongoing exhibits at our five venues around town, HAC also participates in annual events, sometimes partnered with other organizations.  Such events include our Fund Raiser held in the rotunda at City Hall, the Wine Walk in downtown Hayward, artists Open Studios in conjunction with A.R.T., Inc. and the Sun Gallery, our Holiday Giftique, Student Band Concert, (what else here?)
