Roy Hill, Head Coach

Coach Roy Hill enters his 19th season as the Head Coach for the Hayfield Hawks and 24th year with the Hawks Wrestling program. He has dedicated his entire coaching career to Hayfield with a great deal of success including  9 District Team Titles, 6 Regional Team Titles, twice finished in the top 5 at the Virginia AAA State Championships, and led 5 individuals to state championships.

Coach Hill began his wrestling career in 1980 at Hayfield where he graduated in 1984. His individual accolades include a District championship and a 3 rd place Regional placement in wrestling, as well as achieving All-District and All-region status in football and baseball. He continued his academic and athletic career at the Virginia Military Institute where he played football, baseball, and wrestled. He graduated in 1988 with a B.S. in Biology.

Coach Hill’s contributions to the Virginia Wrestling community are unparalleled. He has served as the Director of the Gunston Wrestling Club since 1994 where his teams have won numerous Greco-Roman and Freestyle state team and individual titles. He has also served on the National High School Wrestling Rules Committee from 1997 – 2000. In addition, he was selected as Assistant Greco-Roman Wrestling Coach in 1996 and as the Head Greco Roman Wrestling Coach in 1997 for Virginia USA Wrestling.

In 1998 Coach Hill was elected as President of the Northern Virginia Wrestling Coaches Association and was elected Virginia State Chairman USA Wrestling Association in 1999. He has held numerous coaching positions at the AAU and Junior National levels with great success.

His coaching honors include:

  • VHSL Regional Award of Merit (2006)

  • Examiner Wrestling Coach of the Year (2006)

  • Teacher of the Year by the Rotary Club (1997)

  • Recipient of Excellence in Volunteerism award by FILA, the international governing body of amateur wrestling for the Olympic Games (2002)

  • Fairfax County Public Schools Robert “Bud” Spillain award for Going above and Beyond in volunteerism spirit (2002)

  • Finalist for Fairfax County Public Schools Teacher of the Year (2002)

  • Patriot District Wrestling Coach of the Year (2003)

  • Northern Virginia Wrestling Coach of the Year by Journal Newspaper (2003)

  • Washington Post All-Metropolitan Area Wrestling Coach of the Year (2004)

Perhaps Coach Hill’s greatest wrestling accomplishment lies within the accomplishments that his students have achieved following their careers at Hayfield Secondary. Under Coach Hill’s tutelage, his students have received scholarships and have attended institutions such as the Virginia Military Institute, Virginia Tech, University of Virginia, James Madison University, West Liberty State College, University of Washington, George Mason University, Pennsylvania University, Newport News Apprentice School, Morehouse College, West Virginia University, Ohio State University, Marshall University, Old Dominion University, Elon College, Lock Haven, University of Oklahoma, and the United States Military Academy at West Point. A number of his students have also served in the US Military in various capacities.

Coach Hill is currently employed at Hayfield Secondary where he teaches Biology and Science.
