Research paper requirements

 You will write a 5-7 page (double-spaced, 12 point font) research paper on a contemporary, controversial topic.  The paper is to be written in standard essay form (sometimes called five-paragraph essay).

 

The topic needs to work from a general topic level (such as Gun Control) and be narrowed down to a manageable size (example: Should Minnesota’s conceal and carry gun law be changed?) 

 

The paper will be set up in this manner:

 

INTRODUCTION

-         attention getting device

-         preview of main points

-         transition to thesis statement/main question or point of the paper

 

BODY

-         FIRST PARAGRAPH

-         topic sentence about one side of the issue

-         research and quotations from sources to prove the topic sentence is correct

 

-         SECOND PARAGRAPH

-         topic sentence about one side of the issue

-         research and quotations from sources to prove the topic sentence is correct

 

-         THIRD PARAGRAPH

-         topic sentence about the other side of the issue

-         research and quotations from sources to prove the topic sentence is correct

 

-         FOURTH PARAGRAPH

-         topic sentence about the other side of the issue

-         research and quotations from sources to prove the topic sentence is correct

 

-         FIFTH PARAGRAPH

-         topic sentence stating your position on the issue

-         reasons and research that say why you chose this standpoint

 

CONCLUSION

-         Re-state thesis

-         Review main points

-         Use an attention-getting device to send the reader off in a thought-provoking manner

 

In addition, you will need 8-10 sources (minimum 3 SIRS, 3 ProQuest, 1 Internet, 1 Wild Card) and those sources need to be put in MLA style for a Works Cited page that is made into an annotated bibliography.

 

You will turn in all sources and pre-writing.  Keep everything.
