Brief Biography

Himal A. Suraweera received the B.Sc. Engineering (First Class Honors) degree from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree from Monash University, Australia in 2007.

Currently he is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. From January 2011 to May 2013, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. From July 2009 to January 2011, he was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore as a Research Fellow. From February 2007 to June 2009, he was a Research Fellow at Victoria University, Australia. 

His academic achievements include receiving the Mollie Holman medal, Kenneth Hunt medal upon graduating from Monash University, and the IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2011. He received an IEEE Communications Letters exemplary reviewer certificate in 2009, three IEEE Wireless Communications Letters exemplary reviewer certificates in 2012, 2013, and 2014, an IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology Top Reviewer Award in 2013, two IEEE Transactions on Communications exemplary reviewer certificates in 2015 and 2016 and two IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications exemplary reviewer certificates in 2017 and 2018. He was a co-recipient of the 2017 IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize. Also, he received best paper awards at WCSP 2013 and SigTelCom 2017.

Dr. Suraweera currently serves as an Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications, IEEE Transactions on Communications and IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking. He was an Editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas on Communications Series on Green Communications and Networking from 2015 to 2016, IEEE Communications Letters from 2010 to 2015 and IEICE TRANSACTIONS on Fundamentals of Electronics, Communications and Computer Sciences from 2014 to 2018. He has been involved as a co-chair, Green Communications and Networks Track of IEEE VTC 2015-Spring, co-chair, Signal Processing for Communications Symposium of IEEE GLOBECOM 2015, co-chair, Cooperative Communications, Distributed MIMO and Relaying Track of IEEE VTC 2017-Spring, co-chair, Emerging Technologies, Architectures and Services Track of IEEE WCNC 2018, co-chair, Green Communications and Networks Track of IEEE VTC 2018-Spring, and co-chair, Signal and Information Processing Symposium of WCSP 2018

His research interests are in the areas of wireless communications, signal processing for communications and communication theory, in particular, relay networks, energy harvesting communications, massive MIMO systems, full-duplex communications, and cognitive radio. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
