Brief Biography

Himal A. Suraweera received the B.Sc. Engineering (First Class Honors) degree from University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, in 2001, and the Ph.D. degree from Monash University, Australia in 2007.

Currently he is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Electrical & Electronic Engineering, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. From January 2011 to May 2013, he was a Post-Doctoral Research Associate at the Singapore University of Technology and Design, Singapore. From July 2009 to January 2011, he was with the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, National University of Singapore, Singapore as a Research Fellow. From February 2007 to June 2009, he was a Research Fellow at Victoria University, Australia. 

His academic achievements include receiving the Mollie Holman medal, Kenneth Hunt medal upon graduating from Monash University, and the IEEE ComSoc Asia-Pacific Outstanding Young Researcher Award in 2011. He received an IEEE Communications Letters exemplary reviewer certificate in 2009, three IEEE Wireless Communications Letters exemplary reviewer certificates in 2012, 2013, and 2014, an IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology Top Reviewer Award in 2013, and two IEEE Transactions on Communications exemplary reviewer certificates in 2015 and 2016. He was a co-recipient of the 2017 IEEE Communications Society Leonard G. Abraham Prize. Also, he received best paper awards at WCSP 2013 and SigTelCom 2017.

Dr. Suraweera is on the Editorial Boards of the IEEE Transactions on Wireless Communications and IEEE Transactions on Green Communications and Networking. He was an Editor for the IEEE Journal on Selected Areas on Communications Series on Green Communications and Networking (2015 - 2016), IEEE Communications Letters (2010 - 2015) and IEICE TRANSACTIONS on Fundamentals of Electronics, Communications and Computer Sciences (2014 - 2016). He has served as a Technical Program Committee Member for various conferences, including IEEE ICC, IEEE GLOBECOM, IEEE WCNC, IEEE VTC and IEEE PIMRC. He served as a co-chair of the Green Communications and Networks Track of IEEE VTC 2015-Spring, co-chair of the Signal Processing for Communications Symposium of GLOBECOM 2015, co-chair of the Cooperative Communications, Distributed MIMO and Relaying Track of IEEE VTC 2017-Spring and acting as co-chair of the Emerging Technologies, Architectures and Services Track of IEEE WCNC 2018.

His research interests are in the areas of wireless communications, signal processing for communications and communication theory, in particular, relay networks, energy harvesting communications, full-duplex, physical layer security, cognitive radio and MIMO systems. He is a Senior Member of the IEEE.
