On May 22, 2010 cities all across America paid respects to Harvey Milk on his 80th birthday. Remembering Harvey’s numerous achievements in a push for LGBT equality, thousands of activists, allies and community members organized local actions to demand full federal equality. International Week Against Homophobia anchored the event.
The NYC march included speakers who talked about issues facing the LGBT community: DADT, ENDA, transgender equality, HIV/AIDS, immigration, the homeless, marriage equality and more. View photos of the event here.
The aim was to highlight the many ways that LGBTQI people are oppressed, targeted and exploited in society, from hate crimes to discrimination. In the words of Harvey Milk, "We don't want special rights, we want equal rights!"
