Havurah-Chavurah Har Kodesh (Montreal)

March 23,2012, Har Kodesh gathered at Marilyn's, for the last time.

The Concept of Havurah.
The first Havurah group was conceived in the 3rd or 4th century C.E. as an esoteric, mystical, and elite circle of scholars who were prepared to embark on the study of the Kabbalah- the book of Jewish Mysticism. Aside from kabbalistic practices, the Kabbalists created much of the liturgy found in the Orthodox Siddur still in use today. Havurahs in our time have opened up to the interested masses and have become a "Friendship Circle" or a "Jewish Community of Friends". In our era, Havurah is a term generally associated with free, creative worship and Jewish renewal. It is designed to accommodate people without synagogue affiliation, religious training and experience in Judaism or for those who are seeking a novel approach to Judaism.
History and Evolution of Havurah

In the 1960's Reb Zalman Shachter-Shalomi founded a religious organization, now known as the P'nai Or Religious Fellowship. From this seed grew many Havurah groups across North America, South America, Europe and Israel. Our Har Kodesh has received much of its inspiration, guidance and direction from P'nai Or. Har Kodesh Montreal was founded in September 1988 by a group of 10 individuals who, while being exposed to various spiritualities in the past, still found the need to express and explore their spirituality within a Jewish context. Rabbi Sara Lea Grafstein  then of Toronto was the individual who gave shape to the creation of Har Kodesh.
Goals of Har Kodesh
Our goals are to explore and express our Judaism in traditional and non-traditional ways. This new expression unfolds within a homey, egalitarian, open-minded environment, accepting all who feel the need to explore Judaism regardless of religious background and experience.
Activities
We are looking forward to an engaging return to:celebrate Oneg Shabbat, where we pray, chant, sing, dance, meditate, have discussions and share a pot-luck vegetarian Shabbat meal. We also celebrate most of the major Jewish holidays together. In the recent past and with Hashem's blessing these will return: Women's Rosh Chodesh group, an annual retreat, a study group ,occasional Shabbat morning services, life event celebrations, havdalah services, melava malkas.invitations for speakers, Rabbis or other spiritual leaders to come for an Oneg or a Shabbaton.
