Recycled Bugs

The first graders created bug sculptures inspired by the show at the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA, entitled, “Trash Menagerie.” Twenty-four artists created over 30 amazing artworks of animals using recycled rubbish.

First, the students observed and discussed one of the sculptures of a fish from the museum that was created from recycled plastic laundry and dish detergent bottles.

Then the students were given various materials, such as, Styrofoam peanuts, toothpicks, paper, pipe cleaners, clay, paint, and markers, to create their own sculpture of a bug. They were allowed to create a bug that actually exists or use their imagination to invent a new bug.
