Description

This class is our "traditional" class for children who approach and turn five during the school year. The curriculum is designed to meet the developmental needs of most children this age group, while still preparing them for a smooth transition to Kindergarten.

In the 3 and a half hour day, there is 1 hour and 40 minutes of free choice time inside or outside.  Children have access to a wide variety of materials and can move freely from one activity to the next, and flow from inside to outside and reverse.

The directed activities include two whole group times (calendar, music, movement, theme discussions and story time, news time, show & tell), and three "table" activities, where the children divide into groups, and are guided in an activity aimed at skill development, working in small groups, sharing space, thinking skills, creativity, problem solving, following directions and completing an activity. The activities follow our theme based curriculum and generally include art, science, math and language/literacy development.

Class size is 20, with a one to five ratio of adults to children. The teacher and classroom volunteers make up this ratio.
