G-L14

This page is intended as the home page for men proven or predicted to have the L14 mutation.
L14's discovery was in 2007 or 2008 and was included in 23andMe's new test.  Simultaneously
it was turned into a specific test at multiple labs which gave it the Page57, S130 and U16
designations. We are using the the L14 designation because most of the testing for it has been
done at Family Tree DNA.  L90 seems to be equivalent to L14.  Testing by predicted L14 men to
resolve their status is always helpful.

A research study in 2011 found the Pages00025 mutation within the L14 subgroup.  Additional
L14 men are needed to test for this because it is a potential new subgroup.

L14 has one sister subgroup, L645.   Men can belong to one of them, but not to the
other because each has some different ancestors.  Perhaps a third of
M406 men belong to L14.

The above diagram shows L14's position in the G tree.  It is the youngest of a
series of mutations, each one covering fewer persons as the tree branched.
All L14 men have all the mutations shown above it in the tree.

Almost all L14 men have the 21 value at marker DYS390, but this is seen throughout
M406 men of various types.  Most specific to L14 men is a finding of 16,16 for the
DYF395s1 marker.  Within M406 this is seldom seen outside L14.  Neither of these
marker values is infallible and finding a proven L14 men are among the nearest 
matches at 67 markers significantly improves the likelihood of L14 status.
As of Jul 2013, there were three likely M406 men, Ahmed, Skinner, Aminov, Eith
and Karwick who had the 16,16 value but are not as close in marker value to L14
men as has been seen.  Hopefull their statuses will be resolved.

Age of L14

Comparing the 67 markers of L14 men, it seems the common male ancestor is
likely over 3,000 yrs old.  Whole Y-DNA sequencing of L14 men will provide a much better
estimate of time events.

The coalescent age for L14 provided by Rootsi et al. in 2012 was 6,900 yrs with
7,600 yrs in Turkey and 4,200 yrs in the Caucasus.  It is unclear why the age in the
Turkey exceeded the total.   This is based on a formula used to work with marker
mutations in samples and is not considered as reliable as counting SNP mutations in
whole Y-DNA sequencing.

Geographical Distribution of L14

The available L14 samples cover a wide geographical region, including Europe, the Middle
East, Turkey, and the countries south of the Caucasus Mountains.  This pattern is not much
different from other men within M406.  Possibly of significance, no samples within M406,
including in L14, have surfaced from southern and central Asia and western China
where other G subgroups are found.
 
Origins of L14

Little is known of the origins of L14.  This question is even more difficult in the context of
similar geographical distributions of the other major M406 subgroups.  Whole Y-DNA
sequencing should provide usual information to unravel the information about origins.

Sources of information

No published study has specifically listed L14 men found in the study except Rootsi and 

others in 2012 listed Page57 & Page 19(versions of L14) on their chart and suggest Page 25 is a subgroup. 


Alshamali and others in 2009 provided marker samples from the Arabian peninsula, one of which may be L14
