Meetings & Events

The Hannibal Writers Guild meets once a month. We're in an in-between of picking a final regular date, but right now its normally on the second Saturday of the month at 5:30 P.M. at The Elks Lodge in Hannibal, MO, but may be subject to change. Occasionally we will have additional business meetings that are member-only. Check the calendar to see meetings, events, and contests that are scheduled. We're a little lax on updating this website, but without fail update our facebook event page with meetings, so if you don't see anything here, check our facebook page for up-to-date information on meetings.

A Guild Update on COVID-19 (Coronavirus)

posted Mar 19, 2020, 8:30 AM by Dana Lockhart

Future Meetings, Coronavirus, and the Guild

Everyone else is sending out Coronavirus updates, so it seems appropriate to send one for the Hannibal Writers Guild.

For those of you that did not attend our March meeting on the 14th, attendees and I discussed our thoughts on the Coronavirus and if it would impact the guild at all. At the time, we were all in the "wait and see" opinion. As of now, we're still sticking to that.

However, we at the Hannibal Writers Guild take guild health and happiness very seriously, so we are planning for the worst anyway. Better to have a plan, even if you hope not to use it!

Virtual Meetings

With businesses and stores shutting down, it very well can impact if we can meet at all, whether we want to or not. If our normal venues (Riverside Restaurant, Elks Lodge) will not be open on near-future meeting dates because of quarantine, then we will not be meeting in person. If the bans on gatherings continue, we will be unable to meet in person. Several little things will just literally make it impossible.

With that in mind, we are looking into virtual meetings. These meetings would likely take place live on our facebook page in the form of video. Our April speaker, David Lucas, has already contacted me about the possibility so he is prepared and willing to do the meeting virtually. We'll let you know if we will go this route a week or so ahead of time so you can prepare for the meeting. We'll also send out a link and instructions via these newsletters so you can easily join in.

If we end up not going with virtual meetings, we will probably just cancel the April meeting and reschedule. Come May we'll see if anything changes. A lot can happen in a month - for better or worse. We can't predict the future, but we can try and anticipate it. We'll figure it out a month at a time.

April Camp NaNoWriMo Meetings

We were going to try and do weekly write-ins during April for Camp NaNoWriMo like we did in November for NaNoWriMo, but with the current bans and closings we're just going to cancel that. It's a bummer, but hey, Camp comes back in June, and hopefully (cross your fingers) things will be back to a semblance of normal by then.

However, I do have an alternative. There is a program called Discord that is a more streamlined (and better) form of Skype. It's tailored towards gamers, but it's also a popular app for writers, small businesses, and more. With it, you can create multiple chatrooms dedicated to specific topics. I've used it myself for years for both work and play. I'd be more than happy to set one up for members to use to encourage each other, brainstorm, and all over have a fun time.

Best part is, you can use it in a computer browser too, so you don't have to download anything to go online. There's also a computer program version and a mobile app version. If I end up making one, I'll share it with you guys. In the meantime, you can find out more Discord here: https://discordapp.com/

Once More, With Feeling

It's been said a thousand times, but it's because it's true. Take proper precautions in this trying time. Practice safe hygiene habits. Wash your hands, don't touch your face, and be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to reputable news sources, and be on the look out for fake news.

We'll get through this, together or apart.

Write on!

March Meeting 2020

posted Mar 11, 2020, 8:10 AM by Dana Lockhart

Description:The March meeting of the Hannibal Writers Guild will be at 5:30PM on March 14, 2020 at the Elks Lodge #1198 in Hannibal, MO.

You probably have a writing style and don't even know it. Your sentence structure, length, and the words you choose make your stories sound like YOU. But understanding this and figuring out how to develop your style can be a bit of a challenge.

HWG President Dana Lockhart will be speaking about how to find your writing style. This talk explores the numerous ways you can develop your writing style, from your sentence structure and phrasing to your tone and perspective. It also teaches how to add more vivid language to your writing to make your novel more relatable to readers.

The meeting will take place at The Elks Lodge. For those that haven't been to the Lodge, there is a buzzer to get in and you will need to sign in once inside.

See you there!

December Meeting 2019

posted Dec 12, 2019, 7:19 AM by Dana Lockhart

Jennifer StolzerWe missed them at the October meeting, now they're reschedule for our next meeting! Come to our December meeting and learn all about working with illustrators, including how to utilize them for your children's books! Our speaker will be two for the price of one, with illustrator Jennifer Stoltzer and children's book author Jessica Mathews. They are also both officers of the St. Louis Writers Guild.

Jessica MathewsFrom illustrations in children's books to catchy book covers, working with artists is a necessity when publishing a book. A writer may be able to write a thousand words, but an artist can capture all that in one image. Finding the right illustrator for you will make your story shine all the more!

The meeting will be Saturday, December 14th at 5:30 P.M. at the Riverside Restaurant in downtown Hannibal. We'll be in a private side room, so let them know you're there for the writers guild meeting so they can get you to the right spot. The meeting is free to the public to attend, so bring a friend or two or three (food is not included). We will also be doing round table critiques, per usual.

August Meeting

posted Aug 7, 2019, 9:14 AM by Dana Lockhart

The August Meeting of the Hannibal Writers Guild will take place August 10th, 2019 at 5:30 PM at the Mark Twain Brewing Company in Downtown Hannibal, MO.

Stuck on your book? Can't seem to get any words down? Caught in an endless loop of Netflix and procrastination?

What if I told you you could write yourself out of a writers block? Or, what if I said you could still work on your story without writing a single word?

Come to the August meeting of the Hannibal Writers Guild and hear from acting-president Dana Lockhart as she discusses the ways to get you back to work on your work-in-progress and make it a work-is-finished.

During this meeting we will also be seeking volunteers for the Hannibal Writers Guild booth at the Steampunk festival (labor day weekend). Without you, it won't happen! We need two people manning the booth for every day of the festival. If you are a published author, we will sell books for you on your behalf at the booth if you help out with the booth in some way during the weekend. We will sell water for donations to the guild and raise awareness for the power of writing!

Dana Lockhart will be available for "office hours" from 3 PM - 5:30 PM before the meeting to help guild members with any writing problems or questions they might need addressed.

The December meeting will take place at the Mark Twain Brewery on Dec 8th at 5:30pm. Our speaker will be Ryan Freeman, president of the Hannibal Writers Guild and local fantasy author. He will be discussing what to do after you write your NaNoWriMo novel. Finishing the book is only half the battle. Whether you won or didn’t win NaNo, or if you even know what NaNo is, you can still find out what to do after you finish that book of yours.

NaNoWriMo Write-Ins and Open Mics

posted Oct 30, 2018, 8:48 AM by Kalyn Surls

During the month of November, the Hannibal Writers Guild is partnering with Quincy Books to bring you NaNoWriMo Write-Ins and Open Mic Nights. You don't have to be a member to participate, and all events are free to the public.

On Thursdays throughout November, come to one of our NaNoWriMo Write-Ins.  Bring a work-in-progress and sit down with other area writers to write.  Challenge someone to a writing sprint, ask for advice, or sit quietly and absorb the talent of your peers for inspiration.

Write-Ins will be on November 1st, 8th, and 15th from 5:00-6:30PM at Quincy Books in Quincy, IL.

Once a month on Tuesday come to our Open Mic Night.  Bring something you want to share and read it out loud for everyone to hear.  All ages, skill-levels, and genres welcome, with the exception of erotica. To reserve a time slot, message the Hannibal Writers Guild facebook page the Monday BEFORE the event.  We will take unscheduled walk-ins if we have time, but cannot guarantee we will have time available, so please reserve your spot if you want to participate.

Open Mic Nights are currently scheduled for November 6th and December 4th from 5:00-6:30PM at Quincy Books.

Hope to see you there!
