About Me

My website has moved to hannahchoi.math.gatech.edu

Hannah Choi, Ph.D.

I am an Assistant Professor in the School of Mathematics at Georgia Tech.

Previously, I was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington (Department of Applied Mathematics) and also a visiting scientist at the Allen Institute for Brain Science, working with Eric Shea-Brown and Stefan Mihalas. I am a recent awardee of an NIH BRAIN Initiative K99/R00 Pathway to Independence Award , which funds the final 1-2 year(s) of my postdoc and the first 3 years as a new faculty.

In Spring 2018, I spent a semester at the Simons Institute for the Theory of Computing at the University of California, Berkeley, as a Simons Berkeley Research Fellow and Patrick J McGovern Research Fellow for the themed program "The Brain and Computation". Previously, I was awarded a Washington Research Foundation Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship in Neuroengineering (UW Institute for Neuroengineering) to work with Eric Shea-Brown, Wyeth Bair and Anitha Pasupathy at the University of Washington. Before coming to the University of Washington, I received my PhD in Applied Mathematics from Northwestern University, advised by Hermann Riecke and William Kath, and my BA in Applied Mathematics from the University of California, Berkeley.

I am primarily interested in various topics in computational neuroscience, including optimal coding, dynamical systems, information theory, and mathematical modeling of single and populations of neurons. Specifically, my recent projects aim to evaluate predictive coding models in visual systems, to uncover hierarchical organization of the mouse cortical-thalamic network, and to link structures and dynamics of the mesoscopic brain network.
