February 20, 2022: Winter Update

Here is some news that the executive committee would like to share with you:

Information Technology Help Wanted

The HSPA executive committee feels strongly that our association would benefit from an upgrade to the way we communicate with members and share our information online. We need a more attractive and user-friendly website and a more efficient email and membership management system that would allow easier and timelier information and news sharing.

Our initial research shows that there are many available programs for both email and website design. Many nonprofits use Constant Contact or Mailchimp to manage their emails and membership databases. There are also a number of popular programs to design and maintain a website, including GoDaddy, Weebly, Wix, and WordPress.

The executive committee has limited experience with these options, and we could use some advice in choosing and setting up a new system. We seek volunteers having relevant experience and familiarity with these programs who can help now and be available as a consultant if needed for at least the first six months after we start.

We anticipate selecting new programs by April, and transitioning our email and website over the summer. If you think you can help, please let us know.

New Buoy Storage Site

For many years, Dick and Sheila Johnson have graciously agreed to allow us to store the Hancock Pond navigational buoys on their property. However, they have asked that for next winter we find an alternative location. Bill Van Voorhis quickly stepped up and offered a site on his beachfront near the dam. “I think it will work out well,” said Bill. “It’s central to the whole lake and an easy beach to get to.”

Senator Bennett Replies

On Feb. 4, HSPA President Joe Nagy sent an email to Maine Sen. Richard Bennett on behalf of the Hancock and Sand Ponds Association, appealing for his support for bill LD 1826, which would set up an interdepartmental subcommittee to make proposals to combat invasive species in Maine’s waters. Senator Bennett plays a key role on the Environment and Natural Resources Committee, which is deciding the fate of LD 1826.

Below is his reply:

Dear Joseph,

Thank you for reaching out to me about LD 1826. As you appreciate, this is an incredibly important issue for our area. I am happy to report that the bill was unanimously supported in my committee.

Last year, I cosponsored the Clean, Drain, Dry bill, and I am in active communication with the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife concerning their efforts to implement the program. Maine is known for our beautiful rivers and lakes, therefore, we must take steps to protect them.

Best wishes,

Rick

September 12, 2021: Shore Road Boat Launch Closed

Dear HSPA members,

I have been informed by the West Shore Road Association that they have decided to put back the chain at the boat launch next to the dam on Hancock Pond, in response to non-residents using the beach there to launch boats.

This is not a new policy. Several years ago, they closed off the road because large boat trailers were increasingly using the launch and degrading Shore Road. Partly in response to this, the Hancock and Sand Ponds Association helped fund the renovation of the Town of Denmark’s public boat launch on Wabunaki Road.

The West Shore Road Association's beach next to the dam is private property. We should honor their request not to launch boats there, and instead use the public boat launch on Wabunaki Road.

Sincerely,

Joe Nagy

President
