What is Transition?

Transition Hampshire is
a part of the global Transition Town movement to make communities healthier, happier, and more just from the bottom up. We encourage the community to come together across identity and ideology and use our collective power to create the positive, just future that is only possible when we work together to create it.

Putting Principles into Practice

Around the world, individuals are becoming frustrated with the way our global systems operate. Injustices are being perpetuated in both social, economic and environmental spheres. In response to these exploitative and debilitating systems, communities around the world are coming together to create the positive, just futures that our current way of life cannot provide. Learn more about the Transition Town Movement.

Transition Hampshire is a part of the global Transition Town movement to make communities healthier, happier, and more just from the bottom up. We encourage the community to come together across identity and ideology so our collective power can be leveraged to create the positive, just future we desire.

To do this, we aim to put our positive vision for a just future into action. We support deepening critical understandings of the wide remit of environmental and social problems - while being grounded in diverse, locally based activities and initiatives. Questioning consumerism, interrogating exploitations and social injustices, the transition idea engages people locally, within their communities, to build new understandings together and develop a diversity of local environmental and social actions to make changes within actual places, lives, networks. Its aim is to foster a community seeking change toward ecological, social, and economic sustainability – to engage whole communities in a transformative process.

We want to build our community and focus on achieving a common goal--a just future for economy, society, and environment. We want to celebrate programs and groups already working towards this vision on our campus, in the Pioneer Valley, in the U.S and around the globe. We also want to provide a platform for collaboration between these constituencies so our collective strength can be harnessed towards our common goal. Get Connected...

Our mission statement may seem vague to some--we want a positive, healthy, happy, just future. Our generalizations, however, are intentional. It is up to our community to decide what a happy, healthy and just future looks like. We must work together, across differences, to achieve this goal. In order to transition Hampshire into the future, we need your input and your help. Look at our  Current Initiatives, join the conversation on our forum. If there is a project you would like to do, this is the place to get the conversation going.

Transition Hampshire is in its infancy, but already we are making progress. We can push back against systemic global problems. And we can do it while working together towards a happy, healthy, and just future. Join us.
